Mangaluru, August 6, 2026: School of Social Work (Autonomous), Roshni Nilaya, celebrated "Aatidonji Dina" with traditional fervour on August 5, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Tulunadu associated with the sacred Aati month.
The programme, held at the college auditorium, brought together students, faculty members and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate the region's customs, food, folklore and traditional games.
Scholar Explains Significance of Aati
The event was presided over by Dr. Cecilia Farida Goveas, Controller of Examinations. Tulu cultural and folklore scholar K.K. Pejavara inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
In his address, Pejavara explained the significance of the Aati month, its customs and beliefs, and the challenges traditionally faced during the monsoon season. He also spoke about how the season inspired unique cuisines, folk games and literary traditions in Tulunadu.
Furthermore, he highlighted the cultural importance of betel leaves, the tradition of married daughters visiting their parental homes during Aati, the Aati Kalenja folk practice, and the health benefits of the herbal medicinal drink traditionally consumed during the season.
Degree student Shanthan Rai delivered a speech in English on the importance of Aati celebrations.
Traditional Welcome and Felicitation
Guests were welcomed in the traditional Tulunadu style with betel leaves and arecanuts. The programme was attended by Dr. Meena Montero, Dean of the Postgraduate Department; Dr. Sandra Lobo, Dean of the Undergraduate Department; Dr. Sarita D'Souza, IQAC Coordinator; Dr. Rosa, IQAC Co-Coordinator; and Miss Sarik Ankitha, Student Welfare Officer.
Professor Sandeep Ullal, Director of Physical Education, welcomed the gathering, while Obanath, Head of the Kannada Department, introduced the chief guest. The college also felicitated K.K. Pejavara during the event. The programme was compered by MSW student Harshitha, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Sarita D'Souza.
Traditional Food and Folk Games Steal the Show
Following the formal programme, the chief guest and dignitaries inaugurated traditional Tulunadu food stalls prepared by students. Faculty members and students later visited the stalls and enjoyed a variety of authentic regional dishes.
The celebrations concluded with colourful cultural performances showcasing Tulunadu's rich heritage. Indoor and outdoor folk games added to the festive atmosphere, with enthusiastic participation from both students and faculty members. The event was organised under the supervision of Miss Sarik Ankitha, Student Welfare Officer, and the guidance of Principal Dr. Sophia N. Fernandes.
