Bengaluru, July 2, 2025: In a pioneering move to provide digital access in rural Karnataka, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Department has rolled out the ‘Tarangini’ programme. On July 1, at Vikasasoudha, Minister Priyank Kharge officially launched the initiative, which puts Amazon Alexa devices into 200 selected Gram Panchayat Arivu Kendras across Karnataka. The goal is Simple. Officials hope these voice assistants will make it easier for students, teachers, parents, the elderly, and people with disabilities to tap into tech—no complicated screens, just straight-up voice commands. It’s all about closing that stubborn digital gap and making sure nobody gets left behind as the world speeds up around them.

Alexa powered learning; Sparking Curiosity and Inclusivity

The first phase of the programme, the rollout’s starting with Arivu Kendras in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and Ramanagara. These centers, which were once just regular gram panchayat libraries, got a major upgrade after the RDPR Department took charge in March 2019. Now, they’re digital learning hubs—think online resources, career tips, and even tools for people who need extra help. Out of 5,888 Arivu Kendras running across rural Karnataka, a whopping 5,767 are already digitized. The state’s clearly betting big on tech to make education easier to reach—and, let’s be honest, way more interesting—for everyone out there.

Minister Priyank Kharge described Arivu Kendras as a significant initiative in rural India, aiming to spark curiosity among children. He highlighted the use of Alexa devices, noting their potential to provide knowledge to all, especially visually impaired students, without geographical limitations. These voice-activated devices enable users to access educational resources, manage schedules, and arrange mentor meetings, all hands-free. There are also plans to integrate chatbots to expand these capabilities. Uma Mahadevan, Additional Chief Secretary (Panchayat Raj), emphasized how Alexa’s patient responses make learning more engaging and accessible, particularly for differently-abled learners.

Transforming Rural Education

The 'Tarangini' programme, building on the 'Darshini' initiative for assistive devices, equips 200 Arivu Kendras in five districts to provide digital content and career guidance. With 5,888 Arivu Kendras statewide, 5,767 digitized, Karnataka leads in rural education innovation. United Way of Bengaluru will train supervisors to ensure effective device use, while partnerships with organizations like the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and British Council enrich resources. This CSR-funded effort by State Street Corporation sets a model for inclusive, curiosity-driven learning, empowering rural communities and inspiring other states to adopt similar technologies.
