Puttur Weather July 17 2025: Heavy Rain to Hit Coastal Karnataka
Puttur, July 17, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced a weather warning for Coastal Karnataka. This includes Puttur Taluk in Dakshina Kannada. The IMD expects heavy rain and steady winds that blow at 30 to 40 kilometers per hour on July 17, 2025. The warning covers Uttara Kannada in addition to Udupi districts, where similar conditions will occur.
The southwest monsoon's normal progression over Coastal Karnataka has already brought substantial rainfall to the area, with Puttur witnessing 8 cm on July 16, and other locations such as Bantwal and Mangaluru recording 8 cm and 7 cm respectively.
Agriculture Under Threat
The agricultural sector in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada faces significant threats due to the impending heavy rain and high-speed winds, as per the IMD's warnings. The excessive water can lead to waterlogging in standing crops and fields, potentially causing the rotting of rice seedlings and damaging other crops like sugarcane, arecanut, and bananas. To combat these risks, farmers are instructed to implement preventative measures such as providing drainage for their fields, delaying planting and fertilization activities, and preparing elevated rice nurseries. Moreover, they are advised to use stakes to prevent lodging in arecanut and banana crops.
Karnataka Weather Wider Outlook
The broader weather outlook for Karnataka shows that South Interior Karnataka, comprising districts like Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu, is set to experience heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated regions possibly facing winds of 40-50 kmph. Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Shivamogga, Mysuru, and Bengaluru districts. Meanwhile, North Interior Karnataka, including Belagavi, Bagalkot, and Kalaburgi districts, is projected to receive light to moderate rain with stronger winds of 40-50 kmph.
Farmers across the state are urged to stay informed of IMD warnings and postpone any harvesting activities. Additionally, they are recommended to ensure adequate drainage systems are in place to safeguard crops from waterlogging and the potential spread of pests and diseases that thrive in wet conditions. Residents and agriculturalists in Puttur and the surrounding regions are advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary steps to protect life, property, and livelihoods in light of the predicted severe weather conditions. Continuous updates from the IMD will be crucial in guiding actions to mitigate the impact of the forthcoming storm.
