Mumbai, August 14, 2025: Starting September 1, 2025, the Bureau of Indian norms( BIS) will introduce voluntary hallmarking for Silver jewellery, mirroring the before golden hallmarking frame. This new system will certify six chastity grades 900, 800, 835, 925, 970, and 990 with a unique 6- number Hallmark Unique Identification Number( HUID) for each piece. The move aims to replace outdated hallmarking styles, icing translucency and authenticity in silver jewellery. Consumers can corroborate marked particulars using the BIS Care App’s ‘corroborate HUID’ point, guarding against fake or thinned products and fostering trust in the request.
This development was reported by various business media, highlighting the government’s efforts to enhance quality assurance in the silver jewellery sector, following the mandatory gold hallmarking introduced in 2021.
Voluntary Hallmarking for Consumer Confidence
From September 1, 2025, silver jewellery hallmarking will be voluntary, allowing jewellers to opt for BIS certification with a 6-digit HUID. This ensures the purity of silver items across six grades, giving consumers confidence in their purchases while aligning with global standards.
Enhanced Verification with BIS Care App
The new system enables consumers to verify the authenticity of silver jewellery via the BIS Care App’s ‘Verify HUID’ feature. This digital tool empowers buyers to confirm purity, reducing the risk of purchasing substandard or fake silver products.
