INEF 2026 Concludes: India’s Nuclear Future Hinges on Speed, Investment, and Trust

Mumbai, May 31: The India Nuclear Energy Forum (INEF) 2026 ended at IIT Bombay with a clear message: India’s ambitious 100 GWe nuclear target by 2047 will demand faster execution, innovative financing, and deeper private sector involvement.

Over two days, policymakers, scientists, industry leaders, startups, and investors debated how nuclear energy can anchor India’s energy security as demand surges from semiconductors, AI, and digital infrastructure.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST, warned: “A single hyperscale AI data centre can consume electricity equivalent to a mid-sized town.” His remark underscored why nuclear power must complement renewables to ensure round-the-clock, grid-stable supply.

Key Highlights from INEF 2026

  • Execution challenge: Current 8–10 year timelines must shrink through faster approvals, streamlined land acquisition, and stronger project management.

  • Financing gap: With investments running into several lakh crore rupees, government funds alone won’t suffice. Institutional investors and innovative financing models are critical.

  • Domestic manufacturing: Opportunities in advanced materials, robotics, automation, and specialised supply chains.

  • Startups & deep-tech: AI-enabled solutions, advanced manufacturing, and support from the ₹1 lakh crore RDI Fund.

  • Regulatory clarity: Liability, insurance, and streamlined processes to attract private capital.

  • Public trust: Transparent communication and community engagement to ensure acceptance.

Dr. Shamasundar of ProSIM R&D Pvt. Ltd. described the forum as “the beginning of a continuing national engagement.” Prof. Sanjay Mahajani of IIT Bombay highlighted the diverse participation and the institute’s growing role in nuclear education and research.

The consensus was unmistakable: India has built the policy momentum. Now, execution, investment, and innovation must follow at a scale never attempted before.
