Cabinet Extends PM-KISAN Scheme Till 2031 with ₹3.15 Lakh Crore

New Delhi, 31 July 2026: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the continuation of the PM-KISAN Scheme from 2026-27 to 2030-31. The government has allocated ₹3.15 lakh crore for the scheme during this period.

The decision shows the government's continued focus on supporting farmers and strengthening the rural economy.

Under PM-KISAN, eligible farmer families receive ₹6,000 every year. The amount is transferred directly to their bank accounts in three equal instalments through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

The scheme was launched in February 2019. It uses Aadhaar authentication and digital verification to ensure that money reaches beneficiaries quickly and transparently.

Major Achievements

So far, the government has transferred more than ₹4.47 lakh crore directly to farmers through 23 instalments. During the 23rd instalment, over 9.49 crore farmers received more than ₹18,984 crore. During the COVID-19 pandemic, farmers received over ₹1.71 lakh crore under the scheme to support their livelihoods.

Women farmers have also benefited significantly. They have received more than ₹1.06 lakh crore, and nearly one in four beneficiaries is a woman.

Better Support for Farming

The financial assistance helps farmers buy seeds, fertilisers, irrigation equipment, farm machinery and other essential inputs. As a result, many farmers depend less on informal loans and can invest more confidently in agriculture.

Positive Results

According to an evaluation by NITI Aayog's Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO):

  • More than 92% of beneficiaries used the money for farming activities.
  • Around 85% reported higher farm income and lower dependence on informal credit.

Between 2020-21 and 2025-26, India's foodgrain sector also recorded strong growth.

  • Cultivated area increased by 9.65%
  • Productivity improved by 10.53%
  • Total foodgrain production rose by 21.18%

Digital India Success

PM-KISAN is one of India's largest digital welfare programmes. Aadhaar verification and DBT ensure that financial support reaches eligible farmers directly without middlemen.

The government said the continued scheme will help farmers invest more, reduce agricultural risks and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
