Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner declares school holiday on July 23 due to Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall.

Puttur, July 23: With continuous rain lashing Dakshina Kannada and more showers forecast over the next 24 hours, thousands of students across the district will stay home on Thursday (July 23) after the district administration declared a holiday for all schools and Pre-University colleges up to Class 12.

The decision comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have placed Dakshina Kannada under a Yellow Alert, warning of persistent rainfall across the district.

For many parents, the announcement comes as a relief. Over the past few days, swollen rivers, waterlogged roads and slippery conditions have made the daily commute to schools difficult in several parts of the district. Declaring a holiday is expected to reduce unnecessary travel and help keep children out of harm's way.

The holiday applies to all Anganwadi centres, government, aided and private primary and high schools, residential schools and Pre-University colleges (up to Class 12). Educational institutions have been instructed not to conduct classes on July 23. The administration has also warned that any violation of the order will invite action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Safety First

Along with announcing the holiday, the district administration has appealed to the public to remain vigilant as rain is expected to continue.

Parents have been advised not to allow children to play near flooded areas, rivers, lakes or the seashore. Fishermen have once again been instructed not to venture into the sea, while tourists and the general public have been requested to avoid beaches and riverbanks until the weather improves.

Officials at the district and taluk levels have been directed to remain on alert, keep relief centres ready and respond immediately to any emergency situation.

Residents facing rain-related emergencies can contact the District Disaster Management Control Room on 1077 (Toll Free) or 0824-2442590.

The district administration has urged citizens not to panic but to follow official weather updates and safety advisories until the rainfall situation eases.
