Bengaluru, July 22: Whether you're planning a peaceful weekend getaway in Coorg, Chikkamagaluru or the Western Ghats, your next homestay in Karnataka could soon come with an added layer of trust. The Karnataka government has made it mandatory for all homestays to register with the Department of Tourism, a move aimed at ensuring safer and better-quality accommodation for visitors.
The response has been encouraging, with more than 500 homestay owners already applying for registration under the newly introduced Homestay Registration Guidelines–2025.
Tourism Commissioner Dr. V. Ram Prasath Manohar, IAS, said the registration drive is progressing well and urged all remaining homestay operators to register without delay to become part of Karnataka's formal tourism network.
Nearly 400 Homestays Under Inspection
Of the applications received so far, nearly 400 have completed document verification and are currently undergoing field inspections.
The verification is carried out jointly by officials from the Department of Tourism, Police Department, Deputy Commissioner's Office, and the Zilla Panchayat/District Urban Development Cell. Teams assess infrastructure, hygiene, safety measures and operational standards before recommending approval.
Homestays that fail to meet the prescribed standards will not receive registration. However, owners will be allowed to rectify deficiencies and apply again.
Certificate Within 45 Days
Once verification and inspections are completed, eligible homestays will receive their registration certificate within 45 days. The certificate will remain valid for five years, after which renewal will be mandatory.
A Win for Tourists and Genuine Hosts
Officials say the new system is intended to benefit both travellers and responsible homestay owners. Visitors will be able to identify verified accommodation that meets government standards, while genuine operators will receive official recognition and become part of Karnataka's organised tourism ecosystem.
The Department also expects the initiative to improve service quality, strengthen safety measures and promote sustainable, community-based tourism across the state.
Government Urges Remaining Operators to Register
Tourism and Energy Minister K. J. George said the strong response reflects the sector's willingness to adopt a transparent and regulated tourism system.
"More than 500 applications have already been received, which is an encouraging response. Since registration is now mandatory, I urge all homestay operators to complete the process at the earliest. This will enhance tourist confidence and further strengthen Karnataka's position as one of India's leading tourism destinations," he said.
Tourism Commissioner Dr. V. Ram Prasath Manohar reiterated that only homestays meeting the prescribed standards will receive registration.
"Our objective is to create a network of quality-assured and safe homestays across Karnataka. The initiative will provide travellers with verified accommodation choices while promoting responsible and sustainable tourism," he said.
