Puttur, August 17, 2026: Students should develop the curiosity to understand the world around them and use that curiosity to pursue research, particularly in science and space studies, said Dr. A.P. Radhakrishna, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research, St Philomena College, Puttur.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a National Space Day programme organised by the Department of Physics of St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, in association with the college's National Service Scheme (NSS) unit at Spandana Seminar Hall.
Dr. Radhakrishna encouraged students to look beyond textbooks and develop an interest in physics and scientific research. He said curiosity about the things happening around us can help individuals become more calm, humble and focused while also encouraging them to explore new ideas. He called upon students to take an active interest in space science and contribute to the field through research and learning.
India’s space journey highlighted
Presiding over the programme, college Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro spoke about India's progress in space science and its achievements over the years. He highlighted the importance of research in the country's development and encouraged students to make use of the academic and other opportunities available at the college.
The Principal also urged students to participate actively in the various programmes organised by the institution and congratulated the Department of Physics and NSS unit for organising the National Space Day programme. Prof. Dr K. Chandrashekar, Head of the Department of Physics and NSS Officer, delivered the introductory remarks. Faculty members from the Science stream were present at the programme.
Why National Space Day is observed
National Space Day is observed in India to commemorate the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon on August 23, 2023. The day also provides an opportunity to encourage interest in space science and India's space programme among students and the wider public.
For students, programmes such as these can provide an opportunity to look at space science not merely as a subject in the classroom, but as a field where curiosity, research and innovation can lead to new discoveries.
