Tiranga Yatra in Puttur has unexpectedly become part of a larger political conversation. What was projected as a programme centered on patriotism and national unity has been followed by social-media debates, political discussions and statements involving different players in Puttur's political landscape. BJP leaders have publicly denied reports of internal confrontation, while MLC Kishore Kumar Botyadi has spoken about Arun Kumar Puthila and the availability of more than 20 potential BJP candidates for the Assembly seat.
At the same time, Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Rai is increasingly projecting himself through development, while Arun Kumar Puthila continues to assert the political strength he demonstrated in the 2023 election. The question, therefore, is no longer simply about who won the last election. It is about who can build the strongest political position before the next one.
Puttur Assembly Election 2023
Vote comparison of the three leading candidates
Key electoral figure
Arun Kumar Puthila and BJP candidate Asha Thimmappa together polled 1,00,016 votes. This is a mathematical comparison only; it does not imply that Puthila's votes would automatically have transferred to the BJP candidate.
More importantly, Puthila was not the official BJP candidate. He contested as an Independent and emerged as the face of a section of grassroots BJP/Hindutva supporters who were unhappy with the candidate selection and wanted a local face. That distinction remains important in today's debate.
Kishore Kumar's challenge to the Puthila factor
Kishore Kumar Botyadi's recent statement that Puthila is “going in the wrong direction”, along with his claim that more than 20 leaders are capable of contesting from Puttur, carries a clear political message.
BJP does not want its future in Puttur to be seen as dependent on Puthila. That is a reasonable organisational position. But it also creates a difficult question:
Can any of those potential candidates command the personal support Puthila demonstrated in 2023?
Being a party leader is one thing. Being able to convert personal credibility into 62,000-plus votes is another. Arun Kumar Puthila's response therefore matters because he can point to an electoral result - not merely an organisational position.
The political contest is consequently becoming a contest between party organisation and demonstrated personal electoral strength.
Ashok Kumar Rai is building a different argument
While BJP and Arun Kumar Puthila remain engaged in this political debate, Ashok Kumar Rai is attempting to shift the conversation towards development.
While the MLA has focused on roads, Puttur city development, temple-related works, the proposed government medical college, employment opportunities and other constituency-level initiatives, Arun Kumar Puthila has challenged this development narrative by highlighting unresolved public issues across both Puttur city and the rural areas of the Assembly constituency. Meanwhile, the BJP has positioned itself against both Rai's development pitch and Puthila's claim of grassroots political strength.
In July, Rai publicly argued that politics in the region should move towards development and employment, pointing to projects including the proposed medical college and a veterinary college.
The proposed medical college could become particularly important politically. The project has been discussed with a proposed ₹1,000-crore allocation, a 300-bed hospital and plans for medical education in Puttur.
For Rai, this creates a different electoral pitch:
2023 was about defeating the BJP-backed political structure.
2028 could be about defending a record in office.
That is a much tougher proposition for BJP to counter simply by highlighting its own internal strength.
Three political narratives are now emerging
Three Political Claims, One Constituency
Puttur's emerging 2028 political conversation: organisation, personal grassroots strength and incumbency.
BJP's narrative:
We have an organisation and many capable leaders.
Puthila's narrative:
My 2023 result demonstrated my independent political strength and grassroots support.
Rai's narrative:
I am the sitting MLA, and development should be the measure of my performance.
Each narrative has a weakness. BJP must answer whether its organisation can translate into a united vote. Puthila must demonstrate that the 2023 personal vote can be sustained outside the particular political circumstances of that election. Rai must demonstrate that announcements, sanctions and ongoing projects translate into visible outcomes for voters.
The 2028 questions begin now
The current political developments raise several questions.
For BJP:
- Can the party remain united while several leaders position themselves for the Assembly ticket?
- Can it address the grassroots sentiment that helped Puthila emerge in 2023?
- Can it prevent another division of votes?
- Who among the proposed candidates has genuine constituency-wide appeal?
For Puthila:
- Was his 62,458-vote performance a durable personal vote or a product of the 2023 political circumstances?
- Can he retain the support of the workers and voters who rallied behind him?
- Can personal popularity be converted into another successful electoral challenge?
For Ashok Kumar Rai:
- Can he turn development projects into visible achievements before 2028?
- Can the medical college, roads, city development and other projects become a coherent political record?
- Can he retain the 66,607 voters who put him in the Assembly?
- Will voters judge him on development, or on broader political and ideological issues?
For BJP workers and voters:
- Is the present debate about one individual, or does it reflect a deeper question about grassroots representation?
- Can the party's leadership and cadre move beyond the disagreements of 2023?
- What matters more in 2028—party symbol, candidate, development record or local connect?
The real contest may be larger than Congress vs BJP
The political developments following the Tiranga Yatra have brought these questions into public discussion much earlier than the next Assembly election.
There is no basis yet to declare a formal split within Puttur BJP. The public denial by BJP rural mandal president Dayananda Shetty Ujiremaru regarding an alleged confrontation with Kishore Kumar is itself a reminder that social-media claims should not automatically be treated as political fact.
But the discussion cannot simply be dismissed either. The 2023 result demonstrated the electoral consequences of a divided political space. The present debate is showing that leadership, grassroots acceptance and personal political strength remain unresolved questions in Puttur.
What Could Shape Puttur 2028?
The debate is now before the people of Puttur.
- Will 2028 repeat the political arithmetic of 2023?
- Will BJP's organisational strength produce a different result?
- Will Puthila's personal political base remain relevant?
- Will Ashok Kumar Rai's development narrative reshape the contest?
- Or will voters introduce an entirely different equation?
There is no conclusion to be imposed at this stage. The debate is open. The judgement is for the people. And the final answer belongs to the voters of Puttur.
