Mangaluru/Puttur, August 7, 2026: In view of the continuing heavy rainfall and the forecast of further rain, the Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority has declared a holiday for educational institutions in four taluks on Saturday, August 8. The holiday applies to Puttur, Belthangady, Sullia and Kadaba taluks.
According to an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Dakshina Kannada, the decision has been taken based on weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
The holiday covers all Anganwadi centres, government, aided and private primary and high schools, pre-university colleges, ITI and diploma colleges, and residential schools and colleges up to Class 12 in the four taluks. The district administration has warned that institutions violating the order may face legal action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Public advised staying away from water bodies
The administration has also issued several safety instructions amid the continuing rain. Parents have been advised to ensure that children do not go near waterlogged low-lying areas, lakes, rivers or the seashore. Fishermen have been instructed not to venture into the sea until conditions improve.
Tourists and members of the public have also been advised to avoid visiting riverbanks and beaches as a precautionary measure.
Officials asked to remain on alert
District- and taluk-level officials have been instructed to remain at their headquarters and actively handle disaster-management duties. Officials have also been directed to respond immediately to public complaints and maintain continuous communication with the District Deputy Commissioner's control room.
Concerned departments have been instructed to open relief and care centres in every taluk and keep them ready to respond to any emergency.
