Gokarna, 17 August 2026: Though the size of Jatharagni (digestive fire) may be very small, its role in maintaining the body is immense, said Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Mahaswamiji of Sri Ramachandrapura Math.

Speaking at a discourse in the ‘Annam Brahma’ series during the ongoing Annabrahma Chaturmasya at the Ashoka Moola Math premises in Gokarna on August 17, 2026, the seer explained the importance of Jatharagni, the five forms of fire described in traditional knowledge systems, and the need for balance in food.

He said Jatharagni is described as being as small as a barley grain in large animals such as elephants, even smaller in human beings, and extremely subtle in insects. The saying “small in form but great in fame” aptly describes its significance, he said.

Referring to ancient texts, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati said India’s traditional scriptures contain several remarkable observations about food, health and the human body. The Annam Brahma discourse series seeks to shed light on such knowledge and is also an effort towards understanding oneself, he said.

Citing the Bhela Samhita, he said sage Atreya had described food as a fundamental cause of the body and cautioned that improper combinations or imbalance of the six tastes can contribute to disease.

“The six tastes — sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent — need to be balanced in our diet. Excessive consumption of any one taste can become a cause of ill health,” he said.

Five forms of Agni

Drawing a comparison with the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati said Agni is described in five forms within the human body.

  • Pachakagni is associated with the navel region and helps digest food and provide energy to the body.
  • Ranjakagni, located above the navel region, is associated in the traditional description with the formation of the red colour of blood.
  • Sadhakagni, associated with the heart region, is linked to accomplishment and spiritual liberation.
  • Alochakaagni, associated with the eyes, functions in the perception of knowledge.
  • Bhrajakaagni is described as pervading the body and being responsible for its lustre.

Explaining Bhrajakaagni, he referred to Ayurvedic texts that describe seven layers of the skin. These layers are extremely subtle and can be observed through magnification, he said, adding that ancient sages had identified such details through their knowledge and insight.

Newspaper group CEO Prakash P.S., industrialists Dr. Narayana Deshpande and Dr. Gururaj Deshpande were present and received the blessings of the seer. Members of the Harsha Mankanamule family offered Gurubhiksha Seva. Mohan Harihar was present as the Dinapradhani.
