The programme focused on the continuing importance of libraries and reading habits at a time when students increasingly rely on digital media and mobile phones for information.
Speaking as the chief guest, Prof. Nandakishore S., Principal of Government First Grade College for Women, described the library as “the heart of any education system” and urged students to make regular use of library resources and develop a lasting interest in reading.
He also advised students to reduce excessive dependence on mobile phones and highlighted the role of newspapers and competitive magazines in expanding general knowledge and helping students prepare for higher studies and career opportunities.
Presiding over the programme, Dr. Vijayakumar Moleyar, Vice-Principal of St Philomena College, recalled Dr. Ranganathan’s contribution to the development of library science in India. He said reading books could broaden students’ knowledge and help them contribute meaningfully to society.
A speech competition on ‘The Importance of Libraries in the Digital Age’ was conducted as part of the observance. Prizes were presented to the winners and other talented participants.
Abdul Rahman, Selection Grade Librarian, welcomed the gathering, while Manohar, Librarian of the Postgraduate Section, proposed the vote of thanks. Students of the Fine Arts Association rendered the prayer.
Dilshana K. S., final-year B.Sc. student, compered the programme. Assistant Professor Prashanth Rai and library staff member Jeeta Noronha assisted in organising the event. Students and teaching faculty members were present.
