Mangaluru, August 6, 2026: Tulu Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia dedicated to the Tulu language, completed 10 years on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the digital preservation and promotion of Tulu language and culture.
Launched in 2016, Tulu Wikipedia has grown steadily over the past decade through the efforts of volunteer editors. Today, it hosts more than 3,700 articles covering a wide range of topics, including language, history, culture, literature, science, geography, biographies and health.
Around 25 active volunteer editors regularly contribute to the platform, expanding the digital knowledge base in Tulu and making free information accessible to readers worldwide.
Special Anniversary Celebration in September
To mark the milestone, the Coastal Wikimedians User Group will organise a special 10th anniversary celebration on September 12 and 13, 2026. The event will bring together Wikimedians, language enthusiasts, educationists, students and community members to celebrate Tulu Wikipedia's decade-long journey. Organisers will also honour volunteers for their contributions and discuss future plans to expand Wikimedia projects in the Tulu language.
A Decade of Preserving Tulu Heritage
Over the last ten years, Tulu Wikipedia has emerged as an important digital platform for documenting the language, culture and traditions of Tulu Nadu. The platform has helped make free knowledge available to a global audience while preserving valuable information about one of India's ancient regional languages.
According to the organisers, the 10th anniversary celebrations are expected to encourage more volunteers to join the project and contribute to the growth of Tulu digital knowledge.
Tulu is one of the oldest spoken languages of coastal Karnataka and northern Kerala. While it has a rich oral and literary tradition, digital content in the language remains limited. Tulu Wikipedia plays a key role in preserving the language by providing free, reliable and community-created knowledge that anyone can read, edit and share.
