Gokarna, 23 August 2026: Nectar experienced by yogis through spiritual practice is not something available for purchase in a shop, but a deeper yogic experience that can help one transcend ageing and death, said Sri Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Mahaswamiji, Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Sri Ramachandrapura Math.
Delivering a discourse in the ‘Annam Brahma’ series at the Dharma Sabha held as part of the ongoing ‘Annabrahma Chaturmasya’ at Ashokey, the Moola Math premises of Gokarna, on August 23, the seer explained the concept of Amritahara, a yogic path that lies between ordinary food and fasting.
“Amrita” is traditionally described as the nectar of immortality. The Swamiji said that while ordinary food eventually leaves one feeling satiated, the more one experiences this spiritual nectar, the greater the desire to experience it.
According to yogic texts, the human body contains the Chandra Mandala (lunar sphere) and Surya Mandala (solar sphere). The solar sphere in the region of the navel is associated with an upward-rising fire, while the lunar sphere in the palate region, near the root of the tongue, is described as releasing nectar.
Referring to Adi Shankaracharya’s Yogataravali, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati explained that yogic practices such as Jalandhara Bandha and Viparita Karani are traditionally described as methods to preserve this nectar, while Khechari Mudra is associated with experiencing it.
He emphasised that such subtle yogic practices are to be undertaken only under the guidance of a qualified Guru. Understanding and practising these yogic principles, he said, offers insight into the traditional yogic idea of transcending ageing and death.
A Bhakta Prahlada Yakshagana performance was also presented by renowned artistes of the Brahmooru Yakshamitra troupe. Raghavendra Madhyastha, Madhu G.K., Mahesh Chatnahalli, Mahesh M.N., Rajeev Bhat and Seetharam Hegde Sulagaaru, who served as the day's Pradhani, were present.
