Anant Chaturdashi 2026 will be observed on Friday, September 25. The festival falls on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

The day is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu in his Ananta form. Wearing the Anant Sutra is an important tradition associated with the festival. Anant Chaturdashi is also significant for devotees of Lord Ganesha. The 10-day Ganesh festival generally concludes on this day, and many families and public pandals conduct Ganesh Visarjan.

How Is Anant Chaturdashi Puja Performed?

Devotees usually wake up early and take a bath before beginning the puja. The puja area is cleaned and decorated. A picture or idol of Lord Vishnu is placed at the worship area. A lamp is lit before the deity. Devotees offer flowers, fruits, sweets and other traditional puja materials. Anant Sutra is then placed before Lord Vishnu and worshipped. After the puja, devotees traditionally tie the sacred thread on their hands.

What Is the Significance of Anant Sutra?

Anant Sutra is considered an important part of Anant Chaturdashi worship. Traditionally, the thread has 14 knots. Religious traditions associate these knots with the 14 worlds and the infinite form of Lord Vishnu. In many traditions, men tie the thread on the right hand, while women tie it on the left hand.

However, customs can differ from one region to another. Anant Sutra is traditionally viewed not merely as a thread but as a symbol of faith, devotion and a spiritual commitment. Devotees pray for the happiness, prosperity, peace and good health of their families. In some families, elders or priests tie the Anant Sutra after the puja.

Simple Puja Steps

  1. Wake up early and take a bath. Wear clean clothes. Clean the puja area. Place an image or idol of Lord Vishnu. Light a lamp. Offer flowers, fruits and sweets. Place and worship the Anant Sutra. Remember Lord Vishnu and complete the puja. Tie the Anant Sutra according to family tradition.

Anant Chaturdashi and Ganesh Visarjan

Anant Chaturdashi is also an important day for Ganesh devotees. 10-day Ganesh festival, which begins with Ganesh Chaturthi, traditionally concludes on Anant Chaturdashi.

Many families and public Ganesh pandals conduct Ganesh Visarjan on this day. Devotees take part in processions and bid farewell to Lord Ganesha with prayers for his return the following year.

However, every Ganesh idol is not necessarily immersed on Anant Chaturdashi. Depending on the family or local tradition, Ganesh Visarjan may take place after one and a half days, three days, five days or seven days. Immersion date is generally decided according to the date of installation and local customs.

On September 25, 2026, devotees in many places will observe Anant Chaturdashi with Lord Vishnu worship, Anant Sutra rituals and Ganesh Visarjan. Combination of these traditions makes the day particularly significant for devotees.
