Big Teachers’ Day Recognition: ‘Tr.’ Prefix Approved in Karnataka

Bengaluru, September 6, 2026: Karnataka government has allowed teachers across the state to use “Tr.” (Teacher) as a prefix before their names, describing the move as a mark of recognition for their contribution to education and nation-building.

Decision was announced on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on September 5, during the state-level Teachers’ Day celebration and the presentation of state awards to teachers at the Vidhana Soudha Banquet Hall in Bengaluru.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara said the decision was taken to honour the selfless service and contribution of teachers. School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa also said that the government had formally approved the use of the title.

According to the government order, Karnataka has around 4.5 lakh teachers who play a crucial role in shaping the future of children. The order recognises teachers not only for imparting academic knowledge but also for contributing to students’ intellectual, social and personal development.

Government order highlights the role of teachers in developing values such as discipline, honesty, mutual respect and constitutional values, while encouraging students to question without fear, develop scientific thinking and overcome challenges and failures with confidence.

Teachers are also credited with identifying students’ talents, guiding them in career choices and encouraging creativity and progressive thinking. The order notes that teachers contribute to removing ignorance and superstition and help create responsible citizens.

Government further underlined that doctors, engineers, scientists, professionals, entrepreneurs, public servants and leaders are among the people whose foundations are shaped by teachers. As a mark of recognition for this contribution, the government has decided to permit teachers in Karnataka to use “Tr.” (Teacher) as a title before their names.

Decision has been formalised through Government Order No. EP 216 SLB 2026, dated September 5, 2026, issued by the School Education and Literacy Department. Order states that the prefix is intended to represent the lifelong service of teachers and serve as a symbol of society’s recognition of those who dedicate their lives to shaping the lives of others.
