Bengaluru, 9 September 2026: V. Venkatasubramanian has taken charge as the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, Bengaluru, with effect from September 7, 2026. His jurisdiction covers Southwestern Railway, Southern Railway, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Chennai Metro Rail Limited and Kochi Metro Rail Limited.
Venkatasubramanian is an officer of the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) and belongs to the 1993 examination batch. He brings more than three decades of experience in railway electrical engineering, operations and infrastructure. During his career, he has served in the Chennai, Salem and Palakkad divisions of Southern Railway, as well as the Bengaluru Division of Southwestern Railway.
His professional experience includes electric locomotive maintenance and operations, besides the construction and maintenance of traction distribution systems. These assignments have given him experience in both railway operations and electrical infrastructure.
Before taking charge as Commissioner of Railway Safety, Venkatasubramanian served as Executive Director in the Railway Board, where he was responsible for matters relating to electric and diesel locomotives and crew.
As Commissioner of Railway Safety, he will oversee safety-related statutory responsibilities across a wide railway and metro jurisdiction covering parts of southern India. Commissioner of Railway Safety is responsible for statutory safety oversight in the railway sector, including inquiries and approvals related to railway infrastructure and operations under the applicable railway safety framework.
His new assignment comes at a time when railway and metro networks across southern India are witnessing continued expansion, electrification, capacity augmentation and introduction of new infrastructure.
With his background in locomotive operations, traction systems and railway electrical engineering, Venkatasubramanian's experience is particularly relevant to the safety oversight of an increasingly electrified and technologically advanced rail network.
