Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. recently took on a fitness challenge that is very different from a conventional running race.

Darshan H.V. and Mangaluru fitness trainer Pradeep Kumar Acharya competed in the HYROX Men’s Doubles category at an event in Mumbai. The pair completed the full race in 1 hour, 39 minutes and 9 seconds. Achievement has brought attention to a fitness competition that combines running with strength and functional exercises.

So, what exactly is HYROX?

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a global fitness race that combines running and functional workout stations. The format is simple to understand but physically demanding. Participants run 1 kilometre and then complete one workout station. They repeat this sequence eight times.

That means a complete HYROX race includes 8 kilometres of running and eight functional workout stations. The standard format remains the same across HYROX events, allowing results from different races to be compared.

The races are generally conducted in large indoor venues. This makes HYROX different from a traditional road race, where running is the main activity. In HYROX, athletes must keep running even after their legs and upper body have already been tested by demanding exercises.

How does a HYROX race work?

The race follows a fixed pattern: 1 km run - workout - 1 km run - workout. This continues until all eight running sections and eight workout stations are completed.

Eight stations are:

SkiErg – 1,000 metres
Sled Push – 50 metres
Sled Pull – 50 metres
Burpee Broad Jumps – 80 metres
Rowing – 1,000 metres
Farmers Carry – 200 metres
Sandbag Lunges – 100 metres
Wall Balls – 100 repetitions

These are the standard stations listed by HYROX. The prescribed weights vary according to the division.

Why is HYROX difficult?

Challenge is not simply the amount of running. An athlete must repeatedly change from running to strength work and then return to running. For example, a participant may finish a 1-kilometre run and immediately face a sled push.

After completing another kilometre, the athlete may have to pull a heavy sled. Later in the race come rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. This means the athlete needs both cardiovascular endurance and functional strength.

HYROX itself describes the event as a combination of endurance and functional fitness. Its preparation guidance also recommends training for both running and strength because athletes have to run after performing demanding exercises.

What makes the Doubles category different?

The race completed by Darshan H.V. and Pradeep Kumar Acharya was a Doubles event. In HYROX Doubles, two athletes compete as a team. Both partners must complete the running sections together. The workout stations can be divided between the two athletes.

The official doubles rules describe this as a shared effort. One partner can work while the other rests, and they can decide how to divide the repetitions or distance during the workout stations.

But teamwork is important. Two runners must stay together during each 1-kilometre running section. Both athletes also need to enter and leave the workout stations together.

So Doubles is not simply about having a stronger partner. It requires pacing, communication and a strategy for sharing the workload.

Is HYROX only for professional athletes?

No. HYROX has different competition categories, including Open, Pro, Doubles and Relay. The organisation promotes the event for both experienced athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts.

Open category uses the standard challenge. Pro category uses heavier weights. Doubles allows two people to share the workout stations. Relay allows four people to divide the race. This makes the format suitable for different levels of fitness and different types of participants.

What does an athlete need to train?

Someone preparing for HYROX cannot focus only on running. Running is an important part of the race because the athlete covers eight separate 1-kilometre sections. But strength training is equally important. Training can include running, rowing, sled movements, carries, lunges, burpees and wall-ball movements. Another important part is learning to run after strength exercises.

That transition can feel very different from running when the body is fresh. HYROX's own preparation guidance recommends combining running and functional exercises in training to reproduce the demands of race day.

Why has HYROX attracted attention?

One reason is its simple format. A participant knows exactly what the race involves: eight runs and eight workouts.

The standardised format also allows participants to compare performances across events. HYROX provides official finishing times and global rankings. It also creates a middle ground between traditional endurance races and gym-based functional fitness.

For a runner, it introduces strength challenges. For a gym enthusiast, it introduces sustained running. For a team, it adds another element - strategy.

Darshan H.V.'s Mumbai challenge

Recent Mumbai performance by Dakshina Kannada DC Darshan H.V. has brought this format into the local spotlight. Darshan H.V. and Pradeep Kumar Acharya completed the Men's Doubles race in 1 hour, 39 minutes and 9 seconds. Significance of the achievement is not only the finishing time.

It also shows the physical demands of a sport that combines running, strength, endurance and teamwork in a single event. For fitness enthusiasts in coastal Karnataka, HYROX offers another example of how competitive fitness is moving beyond conventional gym workouts and running events.

In simple terms, HYROX is a race where running alone is not enough - and strength alone is not enough. Athletes need both.
