Puttur, 4 October 2026: What happens inside a Parliament? For students in Puttur, the answer came through experience rather than textbooks.

Five government high schools took part in the Puttur taluk-level Young Parliament competition held at the high school section of Government Pre-University College, Kombettu, on October 1. Students recreated Parliament proceedings and demonstrated their skills in questioning, discussion, debate and presenting issues.

Inaugurating the competition, Puttur Taluk Block Education Officer Suresh D. said students' learning should go beyond textbook knowledge and include practical experiences. Programmes such as Young Parliament help students understand how the democratic system functions while strengthening their knowledge, critical thinking and confidence, he said.

“By practically simulating parliamentary proceedings, students can develop important skills such as questioning, discussion, expressing views and decision-making,” he said. Suresh added that such competitions can help strengthen democratic values among students and contribute to developing responsible citizens capable of contributing to a healthy society.

Participating teams presented mock parliamentary proceedings, giving students an opportunity to experience different aspects of democratic debate. Each team was given 30 minutes to present its proceedings. Through question-and-answer sessions, discussions and presentations, the students showcased their communication skills, confidence and practical understanding.

Competition also gave students a platform to move beyond classroom learning and understand the importance of listening to different viewpoints, raising questions and presenting arguments.

Five students who performed exceptionally well were selected to represent the taluk at the district-level Young Parliament competition.

Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners during the valedictory programme held in the afternoon.

Programme was presided over by Bhaskar Rao P., president of the School Development and Monitoring Committee of the high school section of Government Pre-University College, Kombettu.

Taluk Young Parliament nodal officer Hariprasad, Puttur Taluk High School Assistant Teachers' Association president Abraham, and Dakshina Kannada District High School Assistant Teachers' Association organising secretary Shyamala were present.

In-charge vice-principal Nagaraj Bhat P. welcomed the gathering. Lecturers Abdul Razak and Padmanabha S. of Government Pre-University College, Kombettu, and retired teacher Guddappa Balya served as judges.

Programme began with a prayer by students. Teacher Prashanth Ananthadi compered the programme, while teacher Eugenia P. proposed the vote of thanks. Teachers Mamatha Rai, Amitha, Renita Sushma, Mohini B.T., Gregory Rony Pais and Jagannath P. welcomed the guests. Senior teacher Mercy Mamatha Monis coordinated the event with the support of the teaching staff.
