Vedas hold an important place in the Hindu knowledge tradition. To study, understand and preserve their teachings, six supporting disciplines known as the Vedangas were developed.
The word Vedanga means “limb of the Veda.” In traditional teaching, the Vedas are imagined as a living person, and each of the six Vedangas is compared to a part of that person’s body. Each discipline serves a specific purpose, from correct pronunciation to understanding words and determining the proper time for rituals.
What Are the Six Vedangas?
Six Vedangas are Chandas, Kalpa, Jyotisha, Nirukta, Shiksha and Vyakarana.
1. Chandas - Feet
Chandas is the study of poetic metre and the rhythmic structure of Vedic verses and mantras. It helps explain how syllables are arranged in different metres. In the traditional body analogy, Chandas represents the feet of the Veda Purusha.
2. Kalpa - Hands
Kalpa deals with procedures for performing Vedic rituals and ceremonies. It explains the prescribed methods for carrying out various religious practices. In the body analogy, Kalpa represents the hands, which perform actions.
3. Jyotisha - Eyes
Jyotisha traditionally helps determine suitable times for Vedic rituals by studying calendrical and astronomical factors. In the body analogy, Jyotisha represents the eyes, associated with observing and determining time.
4. Nirukta - Ears
Nirukta explains the meanings and origins of Vedic words. It helps readers understand unfamiliar or ancient terms found in Vedic texts. In the body analogy, Nirukta represents the ears.
5. Shiksha - Nose
Shiksha deals with phonetics, including the correct pronunciation of sounds, their articulation and related aspects of recitation. In the body analogy, Shiksha represents the nose.
6. Vyakarana - Face
Vyakarana is the study of Sanskrit grammar. It explains how words are formed and how language follows grammatical rules. In the body analogy, Vyakarana represents the face.

What Does the Sanskrit Verse Say?
Sanskrit verse:
छन्दः पादौ तु वेदस्य हस्तौ कल्पोऽथ पठ्यते ।
ज्योतिषामयनं चक्षुः निरुक्तं श्रोत्रमुच्यते ।
शिक्षा घ्राणं तु वेदस्य मुखं व्याकरणं स्मृतम् ॥
Simple Meaning
The verse compares the six Vedangas to the body parts of the Veda Purusha:
- Chandas is the feet.
- Kalpa is the hands.
- Jyotisha is the eyes.
- Nirukta is the ears.
- Shiksha is the nose.
- Vyakarana is the face.
This imagery illustrates the complementary roles of the six disciplines in the traditional study of the Vedas.
Why Are the Vedangas Important?
Each Vedanga supports a different aspect of Vedic learning. Together, they help preserve the pronunciation, metre, language, meaning, ritual procedures and timing associated with Vedic traditions.
Central teaching is that the Vedangas and the Vedas are closely connected. Vedangas support the study and understanding of the Vedas, while their purpose is rooted in that Vedic tradition.
