Mangaluru Shines as Minister BS Suresh Sets One-Day Deadline for MGNVY Action Plans

Bengaluru, June 17, 2025: Karnataka’s Urban Development and Town Planning Minister B.S. Suresh issued a stern warning to civic officials for delays in implementing the Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana (MGNVY) Phase II, despite the state government releasing substantial funds. During a video conference at Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday, Suresh reviewed the progress of the scheme with commissioners of all municipal corporations, excluding Bengaluru, and expressed frustration over the failure of some civic bodies to prepare actionable plans.

The MGNVY aims to enhance urban infrastructure, including bus stands and roads, across Karnataka’s 11 municipal corporations, with a total allocation of ₹1,730 crore for Phase II. While Mangaluru, Mysuru, Vijayapura, Ballari, Davanagere, Shivamogga, and Raichur have made strides in utilizing their funds, the civic bodies of Kalaburagi, Tumakuru, Belagavi, and Hubballi-Dharwad have yet to finalize their action plans, drawing sharp criticism from the minister.

Mangaluru’s Progress Shines: Mangaluru Municipal Corporation has been allocated ₹165 crore under MGNVY Phase II and has proactively initiated projects to improve civic amenities. The coastal city’s efforts were highlighted as a model for others, with Suresh urging lagging corporations to emulate its progress. “Mangaluru has shown how to effectively utilize funds for urban development. Others must follow suit immediately,” he said.

One-Day Ultimatum: Suresh issued a one-day deadline, demanding that Kalaburagi, Tumakuru, Belagavi, and Hubballi-Dharwad submit their action plans by Wednesday evening. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action against responsible officials and engineers, he warned. “The government has provided adequate funds, and there is no excuse for delays in preparing actionable plans,” Suresh emphasized.

Fund Allocations:
  • Mysuru: ₹250 crore (6 projects underway)
  • Vijayapura: ₹150 crore
  • Ballari: ₹127.5 crore
  • Davanagere: ₹127.5 crore
  • Tumakuru: ₹175 crore
  • Shivamogga: ₹127.5 crore
  • Mangaluru: ₹165 crore
  • Kalaburagi: ₹127.5 crore
  • Belagavi: ₹127.5 crore
  • Hubballi-Dharwad: ₹152.5 crore
  • Raichur: ₹200 crore
The minister’s directive underscores the state’s commitment to accelerating urban development under MGNVY, ensuring better infrastructure and quality of life for citizens across Karnataka’s major cities.
