A Game-Changer for Green Railways

New Delhi, August 13, 2025:  In a groundbreaking vault towards sustainable transportation, Indian Railroads is poised to launch Bharat’s first hydrogen- powered train, a monumental step in the nation’s commitment to green mobility. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lately participated an instigative skulk peep of the train on X, showcasing its slice-edge technology. Set to operate on the Jind- Sonipat route in Haryana, this 89- km airman design positions India as the fifth country encyclopedically that joining Germany, France, Sweden, and China to emplace hydrogen- powered trains. With a robust 1,200 HP machine and a capacity to carry 2,600 passengers, this train is touted as the world’s most important and longest hydrogen- powered rail, promising zero carbon emigrations and reduced noise pollution.

A Game-Changer for Green Railways

The hydrogen- powered' Namo Green Rail' train is a leading design under the Indian Railroads'' Hydrogen for Heritage' action, aiming to contribute to India's ambitious thing of achieving net- zero carbon emigrations by 2030. This innovative train, designed and erected domestically at Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF), operates using hydrogen energy cells that release nothing but water vapor as exhaust, making it aneco-friendly mode of transportation. It boasts a 10- trainer setup and can hit top pets of 110 km/ h. The hydrogen necessary for its operation will be generated by a 1- megawatt Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer located in Jind, which has the capacity to produce 430 kilograms of hydrogen daily. also, the train will be supported by a substantial 3,000- kilogram hydrogen storehouse system and slice- edge refueling installations to insure continued service.

Ambitious Plans for a Sustainable Future

Indian Railroads has allocated Rs 2,800 crore to develop 35 hydrogen trains, each going Rs 80 crore, with an fresh Rs 70 crore per route for structure. The design includes five hydrogen energy cell- grounded palace buses for conservation, priced at Rs 10 crore each. Following successful trials in December 2024, the action will expand to heritage routes like Kalka- Shimla, offeringeco-friendly trip through India’s scenic geographies. This bold move not only enhances India’s global standing in green technology but also sets a precedent for other diligence to embrace sustainable practices.
