Mangaluru, August 7, 2025: In a prestigious event at Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall on Wednesday (August 6), Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr. M. Mohan Alva received the esteemed Suvarna Sambhrama Award from the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Association. This grand ceremony was part of the association’s golden jubilee celebration, with the honor bestowed in recognition of Dr. Alva’s significant contributions. The occasion was graced by the presence of former Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who underscored the media’s pivotal role in championing truth and ethical standards during his inaugural address.
D.V. Sadananda Gowda Calls for Responsible Journalism
In his speech, DV Sadananda Gowda emphasized the significant growth of the media environment driven by technology. He called on the media to prioritize disseminating factual information without embellishments for the sake of society. He expressed concern over social media misuse and its detrimental effects on societal well-being. Gowda encouraged journalists to maintain neutrality, enabling audiences to form independent opinions. He underscored the importance of objective reporting for achieving impactful journalism.
Dr. M. Mohan Alva emphasized the mutually beneficial connection between democracy and journalism in his acceptance speech. Highlighting the necessity of trust, commitment, and ethical principles in every report, he called for a form of journalism that honors public opinion and adheres to high moral standards. Additionally, a documentary chronicling the association's journey was premiered by former MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.
Photography Contest Winners honored
As part of the grand festivities, a highly competitive state-level photography competition took place, showcasing the immense talent of photographers across the region. The esteemed first prize was clinched by none other than Eerappa Naykar, hailing from the renowned publication, Kannada Prabha in Hubballi. Following closely in the rankings, M.S. Basavanna from Kannada Prabha (Mysuru) secured the second position, while Udayashankar of The Indian Express (Mysuru) claimed the third spot. The prestigious award ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished guests such as MLAs Vedavyas Kamath, Dr. Y. Bharat Shetty, and Rajesh Naik. The event also drew in a number of senior journalists and influential figures from the media industry.
The event was hosted by P.B. Harish Rai, with Srinivas Indaje, president of the journalists’ association, delivering the keynote address. Anand Shetty, founder president of Mangaluru Press Club, gave the introductory remarks, and Jitendra Kundeshwar proposed the vote of thanks.
