Dakshina Kannada Declares Holiday for Schools, Colleges as Heavy Rain Continues
Mangaluru, July 31: With heavy rainfall continuing across Dakshina Kannada and the India Meteorological Department forecasting more showers, the district administration has declared a holiday for several educational institutions on Saturday, August 1, as a precautionary measure.
Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mullai Muhilan M.P. issued the order on Friday under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, citing the need to safeguard students amid persistent rain and the possibility of rain-related incidents.
The holiday applies to all Anganwadi centres, Government, aided and private primary and high schools, pre-university colleges, ITI institutions and diploma colleges across the district.
The administration clarified that the decision has been taken purely in the interest of public safety, as several parts of the district continue to experience intermittent heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
Along with announcing the holiday, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel to rivers, streams, waterfalls, the seashore and other vulnerable locations where water levels may rise suddenly.
District and taluk-level officials have been directed to remain at their headquarters and stay prepared to respond to any emergency arising from the prevailing weather conditions. Departments concerned have also been instructed to closely monitor the situation and ensure a swift response wherever required.
The district administration has urged the public to cooperate with authorities and strictly follow official advisories until weather conditions improve.

The holiday announcement comes as the southwest monsoon continues to remain active along Karnataka's coastal belt, with intermittent rainfall expected over the next few days.
