Mangaluru, July 25: Visitors to Pilikula Biological Park could soon experience improved facilities and attractions, with a Karnataka Legislative Committee directing officials to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the park's future development.
During a visit to Pilikula on Friday, members of the Legislative Subordinate Legislation Committee, led by Chairman S.R. Srinivas, expressed dissatisfaction over the current management of the popular tourist destination. The committee later held a review meeting at the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat office and instructed officials to submit a detailed development roadmap.
Committee members observed that Pilikula has the potential to attract far more tourists but lacks adequate promotion. MLA Shivanna B.S. urged authorities to publicize the park's unique attractions through the media so that more people become aware of what it offers.
The committee also raised concerns about the condition of the planetarium. MLC Shivakumar K. criticized the outdated sound system, video presentations and the absence of modern laser technology, saying children deserve a better educational experience.
Responding to the concerns, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. said upgrading the planetarium with advanced technology would require an investment of around ₹210 crore. He added that the government is exploring a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for the project.
The panel suggested organizing an annual Pilikula Festival, developing a children's park on two acres, and ensuring better coordination among the Tourism, Forest, Kannada and Culture, and other departments to promote Pilikula throughout the year.
Officials informed the committee that Pilikula Development Authority manages 356.20 acres of leased land, with the lease ending in 2030. A proposal has already been submitted to transfer the land permanently to the Department of Science and Technology.
The committee was also informed that the state government has approved the transfer of Pilikula Zoo to the Karnataka Zoo Authority, with the process expected to be completed after necessary formalities.
Officials highlighted a severe staff shortage, noting that only 7 of the 20 sanctioned posts in the authority have been filled, affecting maintenance and daily operations.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chairman S.R. Srinivas said the committee would place the proposed master plan before the state government and discuss it with the Chief Minister. A report is expected to be submitted before the next Karnataka Cabinet meeting, which is proposed to be held in Mangaluru.
The committee believes that with better planning, modern infrastructure and stronger promotion, Pilikula can emerge as one of Karnataka's leading eco-tourism, wildlife and science destinations, benefiting both local residents and visitors.
