Puttur, 22 August 2026: Students of Class 9 in Six government schools in Puttur and Kadaba taluks will get an opportunity to learn Artificial Intelligence (AI) from the current academic year, as Karnataka begins expanding AI education in government secondary schools.
Initiative is aimed at familiarising students with emerging technologies while developing digital skills, creativity, problem-solving abilities, technical knowledge and employability skills needed for the future workforce. As part of the first phase, five schools in Puttur and Kadaba taluks have been selected for implementing AI education. Selected schools are:
- Government High School, Irde Uppalige, Puttur taluk
- Government High School, Nettanige Munnuru, Puttur taluk
- Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Government High School, Puttur
- KPS, Kumbra, Puttur taluk
- Government Pre-University College, Savanoor, Kadaba taluk
- Government Pre-University College, Kadaba

AI education to reach 1,642 government schools
At the State level, AI learning is being introduced during the 2026-27 academic year in 1,642 government schools. Schools include 1,180 newly approved government high schools, 381 schools approved under NSQF during 2024-25 and 2025-26, and 81 existing single-sector schools.
Programme has been integrated with school education with the objective of equipping students with 21st-century skills, problem-solving abilities, creativity, technological knowledge and skills that can improve their future employment prospects.
One AI guest teacher for each school
Government has directed that one AI guest teacher be appointed at the school level in newly approved schools and other schools where AI education is being introduced. Selection process has already begun, according to the department's instructions. An honorarium of ₹20,000 per month has been fixed for AI guest teachers.
A school-level committee will oversee the appointment process. The SDMC president will serve as the committee chairperson, while the head teacher will be the secretary. Teachers of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, along with representatives from nearby ITIs, Government Tool Room and Training Centres (GTTC), KGTTI and diploma institutions, APCOs, subject inspectors and BRC lecturers will be among the members.
AI to be offered under skill education
Under the implementation guidelines, schools introducing AI will offer it under skill education in place of the third-language subject, in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the government's focus on employability and vocational skills.
Department has also directed that third-language teachers in schools implementing AI be considered for deployment to nearby government schools facing teacher shortages. School-level committees are required to meet at least once every three months and maintain records relating to the performance of AI guest teachers. Department has warned that school heads and committee members will be held responsible if irregularities, forged documents or appointment of ineligible AI guest teachers are detected.

For students entering Class 9 in the selected schools, AI will no longer remain only a topic associated with computers and technology outside the classroom. New programme is intended to give them an early introduction to a technology that is increasingly influencing education, business and employment.
Quality of implementation, availability of trained guest teachers and access to appropriate learning facilities will now determine how effectively the programme translates into practical AI learning for students in Puttur and Kadaba.
