New Delhi, August 20, 2026: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy held discussions with Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) Chairman and Managing Director Ramesh Kumar amid growing demand for HMT watches.
Kumar met the Union Minister in New Delhi on Thursday and briefed him on the strong sales recorded during the Independence Day period. According to the information shared with the Minister, HMT watches witnessed significant demand on August 15 in Bengaluru, with customers reportedly forming a queue stretching nearly 2.5 km to purchase the watches. Sales of more than ₹35 lakh were recorded in Bengaluru on Independence Day, Kumaraswamy said.
Minister expressed satisfaction over the renewed public interest in the Indian watchmaker and congratulated the HMT team.
“Under the visionary leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a new milestone is being created,” Kumaraswamy said, describing HMT as part of India's indigenous manufacturing and development journey.
Minister reviews new HMT watch collections
During the meeting, Kumaraswamy examined several HMT watch collections, including Gandaberunda, Operation Sindoor, Independence Day, Janata, Stellar and Amrit editions. He also directed the HMT CMD to give utmost importance to product quality and ensure that there is no compromise on quality as the company works towards regaining its former stature.
Kumaraswamy said HMT is part of India's Make in India manufacturing legacy and expressed confidence that, with continued support and guidance from the Prime Minister, the company could play a larger role in strengthening India's domestic manufacturing story.
Meeting comes as HMT seeks to rebuild its position in the Indian watch market amid renewed consumer interest in its traditional and newly introduced collections.
