Heavy Rain Puts Dakshina Kannada on Alert
Mangaluru, Aug. 2: Continuous heavy rain continued across Dakshina Kannada from Friday evening through Saturday, bringing rivers and streams to full capacity and causing minor damage in several parts of the district.
In Puttur, rivers, streams and small water channels overflowed for the first time this monsoon season. Strong winds also uprooted a tree, which fell on a power line. The incident briefly disrupted traffic and electricity supply. MESCOM staff quickly reached the spot, removed the tree and restored power. No injuries were reported.
Heavy rain was also recorded in Subrahmanya, Kadaba, Belthangady, Bantwal, Sullia and other rural areas. A landslide occurred on the Mundaje–Dharmasthala Road, while waterlogging affected several low-lying areas. Localised flooding disrupted normal movement in some places.
Meanwhile, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. reviewed the district's rain preparedness through an online meeting. He directed all taluk administrations to remain on 24-hour alert and ensure that control rooms function round the clock.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed officials to closely monitor landslide-prone locations and shift residents from vulnerable areas whenever necessary. He also asked departments to place sandbags in erosion-prone areas and ensure quick relief for affected families. Fire and Emergency Services, SDRF and NDRF teams have been kept on standby to respond to any emergency.
The district recorded an average rainfall of 63.3 mm in the 24 hours ending Saturday morning, nearly double the rainfall recorded during the same period last year.
Kadaba received the highest rainfall at 101.4 mm, followed by Sullia (82.3 mm), Bantwal (43.0 mm), Moodubidire (40.6 mm), Puttur (40.2 mm), Ullal (34.8 mm), Mulki (26.4 mm) and Belthangady (11.5 mm).
With more rain forecast over the next few days, district authorities have urged residents to stay alert, avoid travelling through landslide-prone areas and follow official advisories.
