New Delhi, August 19, 2026: Regular commuters living close to selected National Highway toll plazas can now apply for a monthly FASTag Local Pass online, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded its digital Local Pass facility to 121 toll plazas across India.

The facility allows eligible motorists to apply through the Rajmargyatra mobile app, reducing the need to visit a toll plaza and submit physical documents. For motorists who frequently cross the same toll plaza, the digital system is intended to make obtaining a Local Pass faster and more convenient.

Who is eligible?

Residents living within 20 km of an eligible toll plaza can apply for the Local Pass, subject to the applicable conditions. The pass allows eligible commuters to make unlimited travel through the respective toll plaza during the month, as per the applicable provisions. However, the facility is available only at toll plazas included in NHAI's Digital Local Pass programme.

Five Karnataka toll plazas currently listed

NHAI's Local Pass portal currently shows five matching toll plazas in Karnataka:

  1. Hirehalli Fee Plaza — PIU Chitradurga
  2. Jajirakallu Toll Plaza — PIU Hospet
  3. K N Huindy Toll Plaza — PIU Mysuru
  4. Mulawad Toll Plaza — PIU Bagalkot
  5. Rampura Toll Plaza — PIU Bagalkot

The list is significant for Karnataka motorists because eligibility depends on the particular toll plaza being covered by the digital facility.

No more physical document submission

Earlier, commuters seeking a Local Pass generally had to visit the concerned toll plaza and submit documents to establish their residential address and other eligibility requirements. The new system is designed to shift much of this process online. NHAI says the digital facility uses consent-based integration with government platforms including DigiLocker and VAHAN to verify information such as Residential address, Vehicle details, Linked FASTag.

The system also uses GIS-based verification to determine whether the registered address falls within the required 20-km radius.

How does the digital verification work?

Instead of relying primarily on manually submitted documents, the system checks information available through linked government digital platforms. The GIS-based system then assesses the applicant's location against the prescribed radius around the participating toll plaza. According to NHAI, this is intended to reduce manual intervention and make the process more consistent and transparent.

Facility first launched in Delhi

NHAI first introduced the Digital Local Pass facility in July 2026 at the Mundka–Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Delhi's Urban Extension Road-II. Following that rollout, the facility has now been extended to 121 toll plazas across the country. NHAI said additional toll plazas will be brought under the system in the coming months.

How to check your toll plaza

What this means for motorists

The new facility is mainly aimed at people who regularly use a particular toll plaza near their residence. For eligible commuters, the biggest change is convenience: the application and verification process can be handled digitally rather than requiring a visit to the toll plaza.

But motorists should first check the current eligible-plaza list and ensure their address, vehicle and FASTag details are correctly recorded.
