Puttur, 30 August 2026: Residents of Pernaje in Nettanige Munnuru village are now facing fear of a leopard, even as the neighbouring Kolthige village continues to experience repeated wild elephant incursions.

According to Prajavani Report, a leopard reportedly appeared near a dog kennel beside the house of Ashwin U.P. at Pernaje in the early hours of Saturday. Leopard allegedly attempted to attack a dog inside the kennel.

Hearing the dog's cries, the family members woke up, following which the leopard moved away from the area. Later, a dog was found dead by the roadside near the Pernaje–Noojibailu road, close to Ashwin's house.

Dog had bite injuries around its neck and head. Ashwin said the matter has been brought to the notice of the Forest Department. Meanwhile, the wild elephant menace continues in neighbouring Kolthige village.

A local resident reportedly spotted a lone tusker walking past the front portion of Lakshmana Gowda's house at Kuntikana around 11.15 p.m. The elephant is also reported to have entered the agricultural land belonging to Gowda's brother and caused crop damage.

With wild elephant movement continuing in Kolthige and a leopard reportedly killing a dog in nearby Pernaje, residents in the surrounding areas are increasingly concerned about wildlife movement close to homes and agricultural fields.

Leopard sighting and dog attack are based on information provided by local residents. Confirmation from the Forest Department regarding the animal responsible for the dog's death may be awaited.
