Puttur, 15 August 2026: Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai used his Independence Day address to highlight the importance of education, youth development, infrastructure, tourism and social unity, while outlining several development priorities for the constituency.
Speaking at the 80th Independence Day celebrations in Puttur, Rai began by paying tribute to the freedom fighters and national leaders whose sacrifices contributed to India's independence. He recalled the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Kittur Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna, and urged people to remember their sacrifices.
Education at the centre of development
Ashok Kumar Rai said the country's progress depends significantly on the quality of education provided to its children, describing the younger generation as the country's future.
He highlighted plans to strengthen professional and higher education infrastructure in Puttur. Among the institutions he referred to were proposed or planned Pharmacy, Ayurveda, Nursing and Dental colleges.
According to Rai, expanding educational opportunities locally would help students access professional courses while contributing to the broader development of Puttur.
Sports and infrastructure plans
Ashok Rai also spoke about initiatives aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure in the constituency. He referred to the proposed development of a 15-acre professional sports ground and an RTO track, describing such infrastructure as important for the growth of the region and opportunities for young people.
Temple tourism as a growth opportunity
Tourism was another major theme of Rai's address. He highlighted the potential of temple tourism in the coastal region, saying the area's temples and cultural heritage could attract visitors from across the country and abroad if supported by better infrastructure and connectivity.
Rai said improved roads, connectivity and supporting infrastructure could help coastal Karnataka emerge as a larger tourism destination.
Call for social unity
Rai also called upon people to rise above caste and religious divisions and work together for the development of society. He said sustainable progress was possible only when people remained united and maintained social harmony. He also referred to the importance of stronger laws and responsible social values in maintaining peace and justice.
Tribute to veterans
The MLA also acknowledged the contribution of military veterans and former service personnel. He expressed his respect for those who had served the country and indicated his commitment to supporting veterans.
Rai's address linked the significance of Independence Day with the responsibilities of citizens and the need to translate freedom into education, development, social unity and opportunities for the next generation.
The address was delivered during the Independence Day celebrations organised in Puttur, attended by public representatives, government officials, students, teachers and members of the public.
