Puttur, 15 August 2026: Independence Day celebrations in Puttur on Saturday carried a message beyond the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony, with Assistant Commissioner Stella Varghese urging citizens to see every day civic responsibility as a form of service to the nation.
The 80th Independence Day programme was organised by the Puttur Taluk National Festivals Celebration Committee at the historic Kille Maidan. Varghese hoisted the national flag in the presence of MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, public representatives, officials, students and members of the public.
In her Independence Day address, Varghese recalled the sacrifices of those who fought for India's freedom and said the freedom enjoyed today was the result of the sacrifices of generations, not something received as a gift.
‘Civic responsibility is also nation service’
Varghese said nation-building should not be viewed as the responsibility of the government alone.
“Not throwing garbage on the roads is nation service. Following traffic rules is nation service. Protecting public property is nation service. Not allowing corruption is nation service,” she said.
She also urged citizens to think not only about what they could receive from the government but also about what they could contribute to the country.
Addressing students, Varghese said their coming years would play an important role in shaping both their individual futures and their future contribution to the nation. She urged them to work hard and develop discipline, honesty, commitment and good values.
Kille Maidan recalls freedom struggle
Referring to Kille Maidan, Varghese said the venue was more than a public space and stood as a reminder of Puttur's historical journey. She recalled the 1857 First War of Independence and said the memorial at the ground served as a reminder of the sacrifices made during India's freedom struggle.
“Freedom is not something that came to us free of cost. It is the result of the sacrifices of many people,” she said. She also called upon citizens to make a commitment before the Amar Jawan Jyoti to discharge their duties honestly and work towards building a better society.
Amar Jawan Jyoti and ceremonial march
As part of the Independence Day programme, homage was paid at the Amar Jawan Jyoti established at the venue by Ambika Group of Educational Institutions.
The programme included the national anthem, Vande Mataram and a ceremonial march involving personnel and students associated with the police, fire and rescue services and educational institutions.
Students from various schools participated in the march, which was conducted with the cooperation of the police department and physical education officials.
The event was attended by government officials, department heads, staff, educational institution representatives, teachers, students, media representatives and members of the public.
The programme concluded with acknowledgements to the participating departments, educational institutions, students and organisers.
