Gokarna, August 28, 2026: Food is not merely something that satisfies hunger but a source of joy and a manifestation of the divine, said Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Swamiji of Sri Ramachandrapura Math.
Addressing a religious gathering at Ashoke Moola Math in Gokarna on Friday as part of the ‘Annam Brahma’ series during the ongoing Annabrahma Chaturmasya, the seer spoke about the significance of food and the Ayurvedic concept of Ojas, described in the tradition as the essence of life.
Food as a source of joy
Fundamental quality of food is joy, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati said. Food brings happiness whether it is remembered, seen or tasted. Although food items differ in their form, qualities and taste, all six tastes - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent—ultimately provide nourishment and enjoyment, he said.
“Food has the ability to bring happiness to all the senses,” he said, adding that this unique quality is one of the reasons Indian tradition reveres food as Annam Brahma—food as a manifestation of the Supreme.
Food influences strength and memory
Swamiji said food plays an important role in an individual's longevity, strength, complexion, memory, mental qualities, Ojas and overall well-being.
He also observed that intense hunger can affect mental performance, while appropriate food can help restore alertness and energy. This, he said, reflects the importance of food in sustaining the body and mind.
What is Ojas?
Speaking about Ojas, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati said Ayurveda had described the concept thousands of years ago. According to the Ayurvedic tradition, Ojas is regarded as a vital essence associated with the body's strength and vitality. It is described as being formed from the essence of the body's seven dhatus or tissues.
Food helps maintain the body's digestive fire, or Agni, and supports Ojas, he said. “Agni and Ojas are both essential for life. Ojas can be protected through appropriate food and a disciplined lifestyle,” the seer said.
Maratha community performs Swarna Paduka Puja
A Swarna Paduka Puja was also performed by members of the Maratha community, which has traditionally maintained a disciple relationship with Sri Ramachandrapura Math.
Accepting the Paduka Puja, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati said regular interaction between the Guru Peetha and disciples strengthens the bond between the Guru and the community.
He blessed the Maratha community, expressing hope that the blessings of the Guru tradition would remain with the community and help it overcome difficulties and losses.
Maratha community district president Manjunath Timma Marathi, Kumta taluk president Purushotham Shedigadde, Lumma Venkatesh Marathi, Venkataramana Shedigadde, Narayana Marathi and Shivaram Yalavalli were among those present, along with hundreds of community members.
Guru Bhiksha Seva offered
Dr. Rajaram Madikeri and his family offered Guru Bhiksha Seva during the programme. Aravind Bangalagallu, Guru Lakmane, Chandan Shastri Magegaru, Sowmya Madhyastha, Ajit Gudge, Sri Krishna Shastri, Dinesh Hegde Hosakuli and Kiran Sungollimane were among those present. Gunaje Ramakrishna Bhat and his wife participated as the day's organisers.
