Bengaluru, 9 September 2026: Water storage in the major Cauvery basin reservoirs remained strong on September 9, 2026, with the combined storage percentage shown in the official reservoir status report remaining close to full capacity.
Report covers the Harangi, Hemavathy, K.R. Sagara (KRS) and Kabini reservoirs in Karnataka, along with Mettur and Bhavani in Tamil Nadu. It also provides flow information at the Biligundlu CWC gauge site. According to the report, the four Karnataka reservoirs have a combined gross capacity of 1,14,571 MCft, while their combined live capacity is 91,261 MCft.
Reservoir levels
At Harangi, the reservoir level on September 9 was 2,857.72 ft, compared with 2,858.64 ft on the corresponding date last year. The report records 8.067 TMCft of storage and an inflow of 989 cusecs.
Hemavathy recorded a reservoir level of 2,906.77 ft, compared with 2,921.82 ft on September 9, 2025. Its corresponding storage was 24.317 TMCft, with an inflow of 2,911 cusecs.
At K.R. Sagara (KRS), the reservoir level stood at 2,268.60 ft, against 2,283.76 ft on the corresponding date last year. The storage was 11.010 TMCft, while the inflow was 1,619 cusecs.
Kabini recorded a reservoir level of 2,? ft as shown in the report, with 28.570 TMCft of storage and an inflow of 2,912 cusecs.
Tamil Nadu reservoirs
Report also includes Mettur and Bhavani reservoir details received from Tamil Nadu authorities. Mettur's data for September 8, 2026, shows a reservoir level of 762.080 ft, with storage of 57.249 TMCft. The recorded inflow was 8,558 cusecs, while the outflow was 12,000 cusecs.
Bhavani recorded a level of 867.07 ft on September 8, with 5.693 TMCft of storage. Its inflow was 217 cusecs, while the outflow was 150 cusecs.
Biligundlu flow
At the Biligundlu CWC gauge discharge site, the report records an inflow figure of 7,557 cusecs at 8 am on September 9, 2026. Report also provides cumulative flow figures from June 1, 2026, for the reservoirs and Biligundlu.
Strong storage compared with last year
Data provides a comparison with the corresponding period in 2025. While reservoir levels and inflows vary between individual reservoirs, the Cauvery system continues to hold substantial water storage. Figures are particularly important for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as reservoir storage and downstream flows influence irrigation, drinking-water supply and inter-state Cauvery water management.
Report states that Karnataka reservoir details were received from the respective project authorities. Mettur and Bhavani figures were supplied by Tamil Nadu authorities, while Biligundlu flow information was received from the Central Water Commission. Report also clarifies that the withdrawal figures include domestic water supply.
