Baleno has changed; but not in the way you might expect. Maruti Suzuki has given one of India's best-known premium hatchbacks a 2026 facelift, adding more technology, new safety equipment and a new engine while retaining the familiar shape that has made the Baleno popular with Indian families.
Biggest talking point is not the new grille or sharper styling. It is what Maruti has added inside the car and under the bonnet. New Maruti Suzuki Baleno facelift has been launched in India at an introductory price of ₹6.10 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base petrol manual variant. The company has also opened bookings, with the new Baleno positioned against rivals such as the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza.
What is new in the 2026 Baleno?
At first glance, the facelift may look like an evolution rather than a completely new car. The front gets a redesigned grille and bumper, while the familiar LED headlamps continue. Rear design remains largely unchanged, with tweaks to the bumper. Car also gets a new Enigmatic Teal colour, taking the total number of colour choices to seven. But the more important changes are inside.
Ventilated seats come to the Baleno
One of the headline additions is ventilated front seats. For Indian buyers dealing with hot weather for much of the year, this is more than a cosmetic feature. It is designed to improve comfort during longer drives. Updated Baleno also gets a wireless phone charger, a new Clarion sound system and other technology upgrades. The existing equipment includes features such as a head-up display, automatic climate control, cruise control and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Safety gets the biggest upgrade
This could be the most significant change in the new Baleno. 2026 facelift introduces Level 2 ADAS, along with a tyre-pressure monitoring system. ADAS, or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, uses cameras and sensors to assist the driver with functions such as maintaining a safe distance and responding to potential hazards.
Baleno also continues with safety equipment including six airbags, ABS with EBD, hill-hold control, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX mounts and a 360-degree camera. For buyers who previously considered safety mainly in terms of airbags and crash-test ratings, the arrival of driver-assistance technology makes the new Baleno a more interesting proposition.
New engine under the bonnet
Facelift also gets a new 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol Z-Series engine. According to CarDekho, the petrol version produces 83 PS and 112 Nm, while the CNG version produces 70 PS and 102 Nm. Petrol engine is available with a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT, while the CNG version is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission. This means buyers now have more choice between conventional petrol and CNG, depending on their driving requirements.
What about the price?
2026 Baleno facelift starts at an introductory ₹6.10 lakh ex-showroom for the Sigma petrol manual variant, according to CarDekho. Prices for several higher variants were still listed as to-be-announced in the initial launch information, so buyers should check the latest Maruti Suzuki price list before calculating the final on-road cost. And this is where buyers need to be careful.
Ex-showroom price is not the amount you finally pay. On-road price will be higher after registration charges, insurance, taxes and other applicable costs. The final amount will also vary by state and city.
Is the new Baleno worth considering?
For a buyer who wants a compact family car rather than an SUV, the answer could be yes. Baleno continues to offer a relatively spacious cabin, practical dimensions and the familiarity of Maruti Suzuki's ownership ecosystem. Facelift adds three things that matter to modern buyers: more safety technology, more comfort and a new powertrain. But buyers should not choose the car simply because it has the word “ADAS” in the brochure. Actual variant, price, insurance cost, driving requirements and safety performance should all be considered before making the decision.
India's car market is increasingly dominated by SUVs. Yet the Baleno represents an important question: does every family really need an SUV? For someone who spends most of the week driving through city traffic and wants a compact, feature-rich family car, a premium hatchback can still make sense. 2026 facelift appears to be Maruti Suzuki's answer to that changing market.
