Camp was inaugurated by Dr Ashwin Sagar, who lit the ceremonial lamp. Retired ophthalmic officer Shantharaj provided information about the eye-care services available at the camp. He said vision tests were conducted and reading glasses were distributed free of cost at the venue.
People with near- or distance-vision problems underwent computer-based eye scanning, based on which spectacles were prepared. These spectacles will be distributed at the temple on October 11. He urged all registered beneficiaries to collect and use their spectacles properly.
Participants of the free camp will also be eligible for free treatment at Ashwin Eye Hospital, he said.
Free Cataract Surgery in Mangaluru
Shantharaj advised that children with vision problems should undergo an eye examination once every six months. People identified with cataracts requiring surgery will be provided an opportunity to undergo free cataract surgery in Mangaluru on September 29. A free bus facility will be arranged from Puttur for those travelling for the surgery.
Retina Surgery Service Planned in Puttur
Shantharaj also said Dr Ashwin of Ashwin Eye Hospital is currently studying advanced retinal surgery. According to him, only two doctors in the district currently perform retina surgery. Once Dr Ashwin completes his specialised study, plans are in place to introduce retina surgery services in Puttur through him.
He said patients may then have access to retinal treatment locally rather than having to travel to Bengaluru for such procedures.
‘Service to People Is the Main Objective’
Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithi district president Prasanna N. Bhat said service to people is the primary objective of the Sri Sathya Sai Temple. He said health services are being conducted at the temple along with religious programmes. The response to the medical camps has exceeded expectations, he added.
According to Bhat, the temple conducts four eye-care camps and four dental camps every year, besides a free medical camp every Thursday.
Sri Sathya Sai temples are functioning at seven locations in the district, where similar free service activities are being conducted, he said. He added that the camps are not organised for publicity and no donations are collected for conducting them. The services are provided to people irrespective of their religion.

Staff members of the Urban Primary Health Centre and Ashwin Eye Hospital assisted in conducting the camp. During the program, Dr Vikash S. M. and Manjula B. M. were also felicitated.
Shayi Eshwari offered the prayer, while Dr Sathyasundar Rao, president of the Baindur Prabhakar Rao Memorial Trust, welcomed the gathering. Seva Samithi coordinator Dayananda compered the program and Kanchana Mala delivered the vote of thanks. Sri Sathya Sai Temple head Padmanabha Nayak welcomed the guests with flowers.
65th Free Eye Camp on November 26
Sri Sathya Sai Temple has announced its 65th free eye-care camp on November 26, following the response to the 64th camp. Temple said the upcoming camp is being organised in response to public demand and urged people to make use of the facility.
Organisers noted that each pair of spectacles costs approximately ₹1,000 and appealed to registered beneficiaries to collect and use the spectacles properly. The service is being provided free of cost through the temple.
