Love is not expressed only through words or emotions; it is also reflected in the way people give, receive, communicate and share their lives with one another. Vedamurthi Manjulagiri Venkataramana Bhatta highlights six traditional signs of affection that strengthen relationships and foster mutual trust.
According to the Sanskrit verse, “Dadati pratigrihnati guhyam akhyati prichchhati, bhunkte bhojayate chaiva shadvidham preeti lakshanam,” there are six ways in which love and affection are expressed:
- Giving gifts: Offering things that are dear or meaningful to another person is a gesture of affection and care.
- Accepting gifts graciously: Receiving something offered with genuine love reflects mutual respect and emotional openness.
- Sharing secrets: Confiding personal or private matters demonstrates trust and strengthens the bond between people.
- Listening and asking: Showing interest in another person’s thoughts, feelings and experiences is an important expression of care.
- Sharing a meal: Eating together creates opportunities for companionship, conversation and emotional connection.
- Inviting others for a meal: Offering food and inviting someone to dine is a traditional gesture of hospitality, warmth and affection.
These six practices underline that meaningful relationships are built through reciprocal gestures rather than one-sided expressions. Giving and receiving, speaking and listening, and sharing food all contribute to a sense of belonging and mutual understanding. Teaching offers a timeless reminder that love becomes more visible through everyday actions - when people make time for one another, share openly and extend hospitality with sincerity.
