Dharma is an important concept in Indian religious and philosophical traditions. It is often associated with right conduct, moral values, duty and righteous living. An ancient Sanskrit verse describes ten characteristics of Dharma. These qualities offer a simple guide to personal discipline and good conduct.

10 Characteristics of Dharma

1. Courage and Steadiness - Dhriti

Dhriti means courage, firmness and mental steadiness. It teaches a person to remain strong and committed, especially during difficult situations.

2. Forgiveness - Kshama

Kshama means forgiveness and patience. It encourages people to control resentment and respond to mistakes with understanding.

3. Self-Control - Dama

Dama refers to control over the mind and one's behaviour. It teaches a person not to act simply according to every thought or impulse.

4. Not Stealing - Asteya

Asteya means not taking what belongs to another person. It represents honesty and respect for the property and rights of others.

5. Purity - Shaucha

Shaucha means cleanliness and purity. It can refer to both external cleanliness and inner purity of thought and conduct.

6. Control of the Senses - Indriya Nigraha

This means controlling the senses. Teaching encourages a person to avoid becoming controlled by excessive desires and attractions.

7. Wisdom and Discernment - Dhi

Dhi refers to intelligence, understanding and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. It encourages thoughtful decision-making.

8. Knowledge- Vidya

Vidya means knowledge or learning. Traditional Indian thought gives great importance to knowledge as a means of understanding oneself and the world.

9. Truth - Satya

Satya means truthfulness. It teaches a person to speak and live honestly. Truth is presented as an important foundation of righteous conduct.

10. Freedom from Anger - Akrodha

Akrodha means the absence of uncontrolled anger. It does not mean that a person will never feel anger. Rather, it teaches the importance of controlling anger and responding thoughtfully.

A Simple Guide to Good Conduct

Ten qualities together present a broad picture of Dharma. They include courage, forgiveness, self-control, honesty, cleanliness, control of the senses, wisdom, knowledge, truth and freedom from anger. These values focus not only on religious practice but also on how a person thinks, speaks and behaves.

Sanskrit Verse

धृतिः क्षमा दमोऽस्तेयं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः ।
धीर्विद्या सत्यमक्रोधो दशकं धर्मलक्षणम् ॥

Verse describes these ten qualities as the Dharma Lakshanas, or characteristics of Dharma.  

ಧರ್ಮದ ಹತ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳು ಯಾವುವು? 

1. ಧೈರ್ಯ 2. ಕ್ಷಮೆ 3. ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಹಿಡಿತ 4. ಕದಿಯದಿರುವಿಕೆ 5. ಶುಚಿತ್ವ 6. ಇಂದ್ರಿಯನಿಗ್ರಹ 7. ಬುದ್ಧಿ - ವಿವೇಕ 8. ಆತ್ಮಜ್ಞಾನ 9. ಸತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು 10. ಕೋಪ ರಾಹಿತ್ಯ.
