How Should Pushparchana Be Performed? What is it?; Pushparchana means offering flowers to a deity during worship. Flowers are an important part of traditional Hindu Puja. The traditional method also describes which fingers should be used while offering flowers and removing Nirmalya.

How Should Flowers Be Offered?

According to the traditional method, the flower should be picked up using the:

  • Middle finger (Madhyama)
  • Ring finger (Anamika)

The flower is then respectfully offered to the deity. This is known as Pushparchana, or worship through the offering of flowers.

How Should Nirmalya Be Removed?

Nirmalya refers to flowers and other offerings that have already been offered to the deity and are to be removed according to the worship procedure. Traditional instruction says that Nirmalya should be removed using:

  • Thumb (Angushtha)
  • Index finger (Tarjani)

Thus, different fingers are prescribed for offering flowers and removing Nirmalya.
