Sadachara and Anachara are two important concepts in traditional Indian philosophy. They help us understand the difference between good conduct and bad conduct and guide us in leading a disciplined and responsible life.
What is Sadachara?
Sadachara means good conduct or righteous behaviour. It refers to the noble practices, customs and ways of life followed by virtuous people. It is conduct that is considered appropriate and consistent with Dharma.
Examples of Sadachara include:
- Speaking the truth.
- Helping others and working for their welfare.
- Respecting elders and fellow human beings.
- Following ethical values and good traditions.
For example, “Satyam Vadet” means “One should speak the truth.” Speaking the truth is an example of Sadachara.
Similarly, “Parahitam Kuryat” means “One should work for the welfare of others.” Helping others is also Sadachara.
What is Anachara or Durachara?
Anachara, also called Durachara, means bad conduct or unrighteous behaviour. It refers to improper practices and actions that go against good conduct and Dharma.
Examples include:
- Speaking lies.
- Causing harm to others.
- Acting selfishly without concern for others.
- Following harmful or unethical practices.
For example, “Asatyam Vadet” means “One should speak falsehood.” This represents conduct opposite to Sadachara.
Similarly, “Parahitam Na Kuryat” means “One should not work for the welfare of others.” Deliberately refusing to care about others' well-being or causing them harm represents conduct contrary to Sadachara.
Key Difference Between Sadachara and Anachara
| Sadachara | Anachara (Durachara) |
|---|---|
| Good and righteous conduct | Bad and unrighteous conduct |
| Follows Dharma | Goes against Dharma |
| Promotes truth | Encourages falsehood |
| Supports the welfare of others | Causes or ignores harm to others |
| Should be practised | Should be avoided |
Message of This Teaching
The distinction between Sadachara and Anachara reminds us that our actions, words and behaviour matter. A good life is built by practising truth, kindness, responsibility and concern for the welfare of others.
Moral: We should follow Sadachara and give up Durachara. Choosing good conduct over bad conduct is an essential part of living a righteous life.
