Mumbai, November 1, 2026: Reliance Foundation Founder and Chairperson Nita Ambani has announced the establishment of Nita Mukesh Ambani Anant Ashray, a proposed 100-acre township in Karjat, near Mumbai, designed to provide a lifelong home to more than 5,000 people, including orphaned children, senior citizens and persons with developmental disabilities.
Nita Ambani performed the Bhumi Pujan and groundbreaking ceremony at the proposed site on Sunday, November 1. The project will be developed in phases, subject to the necessary approvals, as a permanent, not-for-profit institution. The initiative aims to create an inclusive community where residents can access personalised care, medical support, education, rehabilitation, recreation and opportunities for meaningful employment.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nita Ambani said the initiative was close to her family's heart. She described the vision as creating a loving home where people with disabilities, children who need a home and senior citizens can live with dignity, care and a sense of belonging. She also highlighted the concerns of parents who worry about who will care for their children with disabilities after they are no longer able to do so.
Township Designed as a Community
According to Reliance Foundation, Anant Ashray is envisioned as a community of approximately 15,000 people, including residents, caregivers, medical professionals, support staff and their families.
The township will have eight residential villages, each named after a sacred river of India. Each village will have its own colour, symbol and sensory garden to help residents identify and navigate their surroundings. Residents will live in small, family-style homes with dedicated house parents and caregivers. They will be encouraged to personalise their rooms with photographs, colours and personal belongings.
Every resident will have an individual care and development plan prepared in consultation with the resident and their family. The plan will cover healthcare, education, skills, employment, friendships and personal well-being. A dedicated key worker will coordinate support, with plans reviewed at least once every six months. The proposed township will include homes, a temple, a hospital, playgrounds, gardens, farms and workshops.
Specialised Healthcare and Rehabilitation
The project is expected to bring several specialised services together within the township. These include developmental medicine, epilepsy care, special-needs dentistry, palliative care and other medical services. The planned facilities also include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and hydrotherapy.
Other proposed features include:
- Inclusive education: Special education facilities and a mainstream school for children of staff members.
- Sports and recreation: Facilities for sports, music, art, creative activities and sensory experiences.
- Animal companionship: A farm developed with the expertise of Vantara to encourage interaction between residents and animals.
- Vocational training: A bakery, café and craft studios where residents can develop skills and earn wages.
- End-of-life care: A dedicated hospice wing and garden of remembrance.
- Family support: Respite homes and mobile medical clinics to extend services to families in nearby districts.
- Training academy: A national academy to strengthen India's disability-care workforce through specialised training.
Support for Nearby Communities
Anant Ashray is also expected to extend its services beyond its residential community. Reliance Foundation said the township's temple, hospital, sports facilities and cafés are envisioned to serve neighbouring villages. Approximately 1,000 people from the surrounding region are expected to access therapy, education and employment opportunities.
Respite care, outreach programmes and community healthcare services are also planned for people in nearby districts. The initiative aims to support families caring for people with developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy and complex medical conditions, particularly those requiring continuous specialist attention.
Through Anant Ashray, Reliance Foundation seeks to create a community where people who need lifelong care can find a secure home, access specialised services and participate in everyday life with dignity.
