Six Noble Qualities of Good People Explained by Poet Bhartrihari
What makes a person truly noble? According to the Sanskrit poet Bhartrihari, true greatness is reflected not in wealth or status, but in humility, generosity, gratitude and respect for others. In his famous work Neeti Shatakam, Bhartrihari describes six important qualities that distinguish noble people (Satpurushas). These qualities offer valuable lessons on how individuals should conduct themselves in society.
Six Important Qualities of Noble People
1. Giving Charity Without Publicity
Noble people help others and make donations without seeking recognition or publicity. Their generosity comes from genuine concern rather than a desire for praise.
2. Welcoming Guests with Warmth
When guests visit their homes, noble people receive them with happiness, respect and sincere hospitality. They consider welcoming guests an important responsibility.
3. Remaining Silent About Their Own Good Deeds
Good people do not publicise their own acts of kindness or service. They believe that doing good is more important than receiving appreciation for it.
4. Publicly Acknowledging the Help Received from Others
While they remain silent about their own good deeds, noble people openly acknowledge and appreciate the help they receive from others. They never forget the kindness shown to them.
5. Remaining Humble Despite Wealth
Noble people do not become arrogant or proud because of their wealth, success or achievements. They remain humble regardless of their position in society.
6. Never Speaking Ill of Others
They avoid unnecessary criticism, gossip and insulting remarks about other people. Their conversations focus on positive and respectful matters.
Why Does Bhartrihari Compare These Qualities to Walking on a Sword's Edge?
Bhartrihari expresses surprise at the difficulty of following all six qualities.
He compares the discipline required to practise them to Asidhara Vrata, which means a vow as difficult as walking on the sharp edge of a sword.
The Sanskrit verse from Neeti Shatakam reads:
भर्तृहरि नीतिशतकम्
प्रदानं प्रच्छन्नं गृहमुपगते सम्भ्रमविधिः ।
प्रियं कृत्वा मौनं सदसि कथनं चाप्युपकृतेः ॥
अनुत्सेको लक्ष्म्यां निरभिभवसाराः परकथाः ।
सतां केनोद्दिष्टं विषममसिधाराव्रतमिदम् ॥
Pradānaṁ pracchannaṁ gṛham upagate sambhramavidhiḥ,
Priyaṁ kṛtvā maunaṁ sadasi kathanaṁ cāpyupakṛteḥ |
Anutseko Lakṣmyāṁ nirabhibhavasārāḥ parakathāḥ,
Satāṁ kenoddiṣṭaṁ viṣamam asidhārāvratam idam?

Through this verse, the poet highlights how difficult it is to consistently practise these virtues in everyday life.
Message for Everyday Life
Bhartrihari's six qualities remind us that true character is demonstrated through actions rather than words or wealth. Helping without publicity, welcoming others, appreciating those who help us, remaining humble and speaking respectfully are timeless values that strengthen relationships and society. The central lesson is that being a good person is not just about doing good deeds; it is also about practising humility, gratitude and kindness in everyday life.
