Karnataka Approves ₹7.88 Crore Automated Driving Test Track in Puttur
Monday, March 10, 2025
Automated Driving Test System (ADTS) is Set to be developed on 5.4 acres in Mundoor village, approximately 10 km from Puttur town, this facility aims to revolutionize the driving license testing process with cutting-edge technology. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bengaluru, will oversee the construction of the track, designed for two-wheelers and light motor vehicles (LMVs), as per a government order issued on February 21 by the Transport Department.
Advanced Technology for Accurate Testing
The ADTS employs electronic sensor-based technology to evaluate driving skills automatically. Applicants will navigate pre-designed tracks in various shapes, with sensors ensuring precise assessment by detecting errors, such as touching poles. This system ensures a fair, transparent, and efficient process, reducing human intervention and enhancing road safety by certifying competent drivers.
Second ADTS in Dakshina Kannada
Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai welcomed the decision, noting that the Puttur facility will be the second ADTS in Dakshina Kannada, following the one at Mudipu near Mangaluru. The track will serve driving license applicants from Puttur, Belthangady, Sullia, Kadaba taluks, and Vittla hobli, reducing travel burdens and boosting local economic activity. The 2024-25 State Budget also proposed ADTS facilities in Udupi, Chikkaballapura, Nelamangala, Madikeri, Madhugiri, Hunsur, and seizing yards in Devanahalli and Tumakuru.
From Udupi to Puttur: A Strategic Shift
Initially planned for Alevoor in Udupi, the project faced challenges as the identified land was classified as a deemed forest, unsuitable for non-forestry activities. To prevent the allocated funds from lapsing, MLA Rai proposed shifting the project to Puttur and identified suitable land in Mundoor village. His proactive efforts ensured the project’s continuation, with administrative approval now in place for swift implementation.
Features of the Puttur ADTS Complex
The Puttur ADTS facility will include:
- Dedicated test tracks for two-wheelers and LMVs
- An administrative block
- A control room for monitoring tests
- A toilet block
- Supporting infrastructure like compound walls, water, power supply, and landscaping
What’s Next for Puttur?
With administrative approval secured, construction is expected to begin soon. The facility promises to streamline the licensing process, enhance accessibility, and set a benchmark for modern driving test infrastructure in Karnataka. MLA Rai emphasized that the ADTS will not only improve testing efficiency but also contribute to the region’s economic growth.
Stay updated as this transformative project takes shape in Puttur, paving the way for safer roads and skilled drivers in Karnataka.
