Yet, many quietly work to contribute to society, offering hope. Social media, however, is criticized for encouraging mockery and trolling over genuine social service. Platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Twitter have engulfed us, sometimes likened to addiction. But how inspiring are they for social service? Social media has saved lives through blood donation drives and aid campaigns, yet it can also spread harm, a worrying paradox. True social service—selfless help to those in need—rarely makes headlines. Some seek publicity, while others silently serve, preserving the essence of social service.
Donating with self-praise or expecting rewards dilutes its meaning. Social service isn’t charity or business; it’s preventing suffering, not just consoling it. The commonality between social media and social service lies in “social.” Platforms like WhatsApp can spread hate, but also relay messages of blood donation or poverty relief, showing their potential for good. When used responsibly, social media amplifies social service.
