Red Alert Issued for Dakshina Kannada
The IMD’s forecast of intense rainfall has put Dakshina Kannada on high alert, with Puttur taluk identified as a high-risk area due to its hilly terrain and history of monsoon-related disruptions. The Red Alert signals the need for immediate action, prompting district officials to mobilize resources and issue warnings to residents in vulnerable zones.
Puttur Taluk’s Emergency Response Plan
On June 11, Puttur Tahsildar Nagaraj convened an emergency meeting at the Puttur Taluk Panchayat to strategize disaster preparedness. The meeting brought together taluk-level officials, Gram Panchayat (GP) administrators, and development officers to address the impending crisis. Nagaraj directed teams to identify areas prone to landslides, flooding, and structural damage, emphasizing the use of GPS-based photography to document high-risk zones. “All vulnerable sites must be registered and reported to the district administration,” he stated, warning that negligence would lead to strict consequences.
Preventive Measures to Avoid Casualties
Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Naveen Kumar Bhandari stressed the urgency of relocating residents from dangerous structures. “This is a forecast for pouring rain. We cannot afford delays,” Bhandari said, instructing officials to issue relocation notices for at-risk homes and ensure residents are moved to safe locations or care centers. He urged officials to conduct on-ground inspections to verify compliance and assess risks. The administration has also advised residents to avoid low-lying areas, riverbanks, and seashores, while fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea.
Community Concerns and Preparedness
Puttur’s residents, familiar with the region’s monsoon challenges, are anxious about the potential impact. “The rains can cause havoc, especially in rural areas. We trust the authorities are doing their best,” said Sanjeeva, a shopkeeper from Puttur’s Kumbra area. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) reported that Puttur recorded 95.8 mm of rainfall in a single day in July 2023, leading to significant disruptions. With the Red Alert in effect, emergency control rooms are operational 24/7, with toll-free number 1077 and district-specific lines (0824-2442590) available for residents to seek assistance.
As Dakshina Kannada braces for the heavy rainfall, the coordinated efforts of Puttur’s officials, disaster response teams, and community vigilance will be crucial in minimizing the impact of this severe weather event.
