Mangaluru, July 23: Daily commuters, school buses, two-wheeler riders and motorists travelling through Vittla, Sullia and Uppinangady can expect safer roads as the Dakshina Kannada District Police have activated traffic enforcement cameras at key locations in these areas.
The cameras, which became operational on July 23, are part of the district police's first phase of a technology-driven road safety initiative. Besides the three towns, cameras have also been installed at strategic locations under the Bantwal Rural Police Station limits.
Unlike conventional CCTV systems, these cameras are designed to detect traffic rule violations. When a violation is recorded, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a notice from the police.

For many residents, the initiative is expected to bring greater discipline on busy roads where speeding, dangerous overtaking, riding without helmets and other violations have often contributed to accidents. Parents whose children travel to school, pedestrians crossing busy junctions and regular commuters are among those who stand to benefit from improved enforcement.
Police officials have clarified that the objective is not merely to issue notices but to encourage responsible driving and reduce preventable road accidents. They have appealed to motorists to wear helmets, fasten seat belts, obey speed limits and follow all traffic regulations.
As Dakshina Kannada continues to witness increasing vehicle movement, authorities believe technology-assisted enforcement will help create safer roads while reminding every road user that a few seconds of caution can save lives.
