New Delhi, 11 August 2026: Karnataka accounts for more than 76% of the country’s GST collection from arecanut and arecanut-based products, according to data cited by Shivamogga MP B.Y. Raghavendra in Parliament.
Raghavendra said Karnataka contributed 76.42% of the total GST collected from arecanut and related products across the country. The figures cover GST collections under the relevant HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes for arecanut, including whole and broken arecanut and other arecanut-based products.
Karnataka’s GST contribution rises
According to the figures cited by Raghavendra, Karnataka’s GST collection from the sector increased from ₹172.62 crore in 2021-22 to ₹379.34 crore in 2025-26.
This represents an increase of nearly 120% over five years, highlighting the growing contribution of the arecanut sector to the state’s economy. The upward trend has continued into the current financial year. During the first quarter of 2026-27, Karnataka collected ₹90.02 crore in GST from the sector.
During the same period, the total GST collection from the sector across India stood at ₹117.99 crore, with Karnataka accounting for approximately 76.3% of the national collection.
Arecanut’s economic importance
Raghavendra said the figures underline the economic importance of arecanut cultivation in Karnataka and the contribution made by arecanut farmers to the national economy. He pointed out that the Malnad and coastal regions of Karnataka are home to lakhs of arecanut-growing families whose livelihoods depend on the crop.
The data, he said, demonstrate the significant economic role played by the arecanut sector and the farmers associated with it.
