Bengaluru, August 29, 2026: Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has directed officials to initiate action to clear encroachments on lakes located within Gram Panchayat limits across Karnataka.
In a written direction to the Secretary of the department, the Minister has sought comprehensive details of all lakes that come under the jurisdiction and maintenance of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department.
Officials have been asked to submit the information within 10 days, including the number of lakes under the department, the extent of land encroached upon in each lake and the action already taken to remove the encroachments.
Khandre said lakes are the lifeline of people living in rural areas and stressed the need to protect these water bodies, particularly in view of the State government's plans to provide drinking water from surface water sources.
Minister noted that the government is planning for the expected growth in the rural population over the next 30 years. Protecting important freshwater sources such as lakes and reservoirs will therefore be essential to ensure sustainable drinking water availability, he said.
Highlighting the historical and ecological importance of lakes, Khandre said they have played a significant role in the development of human civilisation. Protecting lakes and reservoirs, ensuring their sustainable management and preserving their role in the ecosystem are essential.
Minister issued the direction on the occasion of World Lake Day, observed every year on August 27, with the objective of creating global awareness about the protection and sustainable management of lakes and their importance to ecosystems.
