New Delhi, August 15, 2026: President Droupadi Murmu has called upon citizens to contribute collectively to the national goal of transforming India into a Viksit Bharat by 2047, saying the development and wellbeing of every Indian should remain at the centre of the country's progress.
Addressing the nation on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, the President said every citizen had a role in nation-building and praised the contributions of farmers, students, teachers, scientists, healthcare workers, workers, entrepreneurs, soldiers, police personnel and others.
President Murmu highlighted the country's progress in infrastructure, digital technology, financial inclusion, healthcare and social welfare. She said more than 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty, while nearly 59 crore people have joined the banking system through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.
She also underlined the importance of India's young population, noting that 65% of the country's population is below the age of 35. Describing youth as India's most valuable asset, she highlighted the growth of entrepreneurship, start-ups, self-employment and new opportunities for young people.
The President said students were the architects of India's future and stressed the need to make public examinations more transparent, secure and trustworthy by curbing unfair practices.
Women’s growing participation in education, sports, entrepreneurship and leadership also featured prominently in the address. President Murmu highlighted the contribution of women through Self Help Groups, the Lakhpati Didi initiative, MUDRA-supported enterprises and various professional fields.
On national security, the President recalled the valour of the Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor and paid tribute to the country's soldiers and security personnel. She also said that making India free of Naxalism was a major achievement and noted the development taking place in areas earlier affected by Left-Wing Extremism.
The President also called for greater responsibility towards the environment, stressing that future generations have an equal right to natural resources. She urged citizens to participate in efforts to protect nature and promote sustainable development.
Referring to India's growing role globally, President Murmu said peace, cooperation, dialogue and the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam remained important pillars of India's foreign policy.
She concluded her address with a call for an inclusive spirit of patriotism, urging citizens to work together to transform Swatantra Bharat into Viksit Bharat. “Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!” she said at the conclusion of the address.
